Last Saturday night I headed along to The Village to Maverick Sabre, one of the year’s most talked about breaking acts. Opening up for Mav were Rob Kelly and Sons Phonetic. It was a little mad I knew a lot of Mav’s friends and collaborators who were at the gig but have never met the man himself, must sort to do an interview when his album comes out.You can read the review over on Goldenplec.
I can’t believe it’s a week since this gig! I had the honour of chatting to Patrick Wolf before the gig and to be honest, he’s such a lovely guy, I really enjoyed the gig and will always remember it for being the gig I went to in the middle of the rain apocalypse. (October 24th). I love too when you get a decent support act, CocknBullKid was great. Read the review on Goldenplec.
Is Ireland turning a corner? Hazard from The Saw Doctors is one of two CDs that dropped in my inbox this week, documenting the current shit the country is in.
Hazard is taken from ‘The Further Adventures of…’, cleverly the uptempo beat of the track counteracts the lyrics telling of a current Ireland. It’s all about being back on the dole while somehow the instrumentation of the track almost implies that nothing will keep us down.
It’s a pity about radio restrictions and censoring some times, which the actual words ‘The Country is Fcuked’ don’t appear in the lyrics anywhere, it’s almost like I wished that just this once, they were in there. It’s not a bad track at all, it’s memorable and it’s catchy. Again, The Saw Doctors just have that knack for everyday real life lyrics and songs.
For me the really interesting thing will be radio play with these types of songs and how much they will actually get. Local stations shouldn’t have too much trouble playing these but what about the nationals? I look forward to the next few weeks to find out.
Just as the evenings are getting longer and darker, Wonder Villians have come along and brightened up our stereos. The Derry based band are an aural pleasure and Zola is a delightful introduction to the band.
In the past, footballers and music haven’t really mixed very well, (I’m thinking Hoddle and Waddle here), but this track about the Italian maestro is nothing short of brilliant. Upbeat, melodioc, great groove and a real cute ‘Zola’ refrain. It’s a bit staggering when you realize that Wonder Villains are all just out of school. Two minutes and forty seven seconds of bliss.
’33’ continues the upbeat theme and immediately to want to bop along. The band have beautiful rises and falls within the track and live this should lead to a pretty good show. ‘Running in Circles’ is still officially a demo but I just love this track, nice distorted guitars and really nice pounding bass sound.
Great debut and even better for a band so young. Catch them supporting General Fiasco at Academy 2 Dublin on October 22nd.
