It’s a nice Spring evening (April 9th), I stroll casually from Stephen’s Green, where I’d been enjoying the fresh air, to The Sugar Club, two minutes walk away. It’s just after seven thirty and to my surprise, there’s a queue winding its way past the venue and up Leeson St.
Talking to others in the queue becomes quite an eye opener as to how popular Brooke Fraser actually is. Two Canadian girls tell me they have flown from Toronto and yes, they have seen Ms Fraser before. Wow! This should be good so.
Warming up the stage for Fraser is Liz Lawrence, who along with Harry on cajon, really get the crowd going. We all have preconceived notions about singer songwriters and about female ones. They’re all going to sound like Mid American whingers. Not the case with Lawrence she combines genres to create her own sound and has an energy which forces her to dance with her guitar while she sings. (more…)
Faithless played their last gig in the Brixton Academy on April 8th. I wasn’t there, I was one of the people watching it via satellite in numerous cinemas across Europe.
Faithless have been the musical act that I consider ‘The one that got away’ I had never seen the band live and always wanted to. For some reason that never happened so I was going to have to settle for the next best thing. I was looking forward to this as I also had never seen a concert in cinema before so it was going to be a night of firsts.
I was a little surprised how empty Cineworld, Parnell St, Dublin was at 22.15, just fifteen minutes before the event was due to start. I also thought that seeing as it was a gig there might be some pumping tunes to keep us entertained before the show, we got a long orchestral version of, I think, the Star Trek theme.
Here’s where I wish I could split the experience into two. The Faithless experience and the cinema experience. Unfortunately the two are connected. (more…)
There aren’t too many bands that I go and see gigs of a few weeks apart. When the opportunity arose to head to The Academy to Cloud Control on April 7th, I jumped at the chance. I had seen the band open for The Naked and Famous in The Button Factory and was looking for to seeing how their own headliner in a smaller venue would go down.
There were two supports on the night, Hello Moon and The Kanyu Tree. Catching only the last track from a band isn’t fair to comment on them but they had a decent pop indie sound, I wouldn’t mind hearing more.
The Kanyu Tree have been knocking around the Irish scene for a few years now and have just signed to Sony. Their new single ‘Radio’ is all over the airwaves at the moment so this was a good opportunity for them to get to an indier pop audience. (more…)
