  • Ryan Sheridan: The Dreamer Review

Ryan Sheridan DreamerI’ll be the first to admit that while I really liked ‘Jigsaw’ when I saw Ryan live I was hoping there would be another cracker in there. I wasn’t 100% sure but now I’ve heard this, I actually prefer this to Jigsaw.

You’ve still got Ryan’s trademark guitar style and Artur’s cajon playing but this is a bit more rocky and during the refrain Ryan sounds uncannily like Rob Thomas, which is a good thing in my books.

The production on the track is really clever, it doesn’t overcrowd the sound that everyone has got to know Ryan for.  Bass line subtleties, hi hats and snares never take away from Ryan’s distinct sound.

What’s more, with this track, Ryan could easily take over AOR radio in the US. Really great move as a second single.

  • TransAutoRadio: 3 Review

This CD and press release grabbed by attention because it said this was a ‘Triple A side’ release, so its a triangle?

After a couple of listens to TransAutoRadio I would say this isn’t a Triple A single release but more of an album sampler. The tracks included on the disc are all in around the five minute mark so a radio single release with be a bit hard, due to their length. But that mightn’t be what the band are going for.

The band use a variety of instruments, electronic, wind, string and synths throughout the tracks and possess an early 70’s experimental feel. After listening to ‘Waving Nor Drowning’, something tells me they may like Pink Floyd. (more…)

  • Gypsies On The Autobahn: Demo Review

GOTA Having twice received information about a Gypsies On The Autobahn gig on March 11th in Academy 2 (see I got the plug in!), I decided to check the guys out. Question? How long can a band be together and still call themselves newcomers? “Together almost 5 years now Gypsies On The Autobahn are have fast become one of the most talked about young newcomers to the Irish music scene.” Enough about that, what are they like?

The demo starts with ‘Hidden’, the most polished of all the tracks and sounds like The Script having an indie day. Memorable hooks and lyrics, tight musicianship and just ever so right harmonies come together with the end result being a pretty decent track with a nice ending. (more…)

  • MGB: For The Ones We Knew Review

MACHINE GUN BABY coverMBG are back with a new abbreviated initialised name and a 5 track EP. The four piece have grown up since their debut ‘Yes I’ll Wait’ but now the Kings of Leon influence has taken over a little too much methinks.

After the first track, ‘Judgement Day’, the KOL wears a tad on the ears. The band are good musicians and production is good. This just feels a little bit by the book. There are elements throughout ‘On My Way’ that are reminiscent of White Lies while ‘The Rescue’ shows the vocal influence of Arcade Fire.

Last track on the EP is ‘On The Fence’ and is exactly where I am about MGB. The ‘live’ track while good and showing a slightly different side of the band, especially with percussion, has more whelps and whoops at the start than many MTV unplugged sessions. A little bit of overkill.

Musically and lyrically, you can see MBG developing as a band, they need, though to define their sound to stand out from the crowd.
