With a name like Róisín and The Beards, one automatically hopes that The lady in question has a couple of blokes in her band and doesn’t suffer from some other terrible affliction. On seeing photographs of the band, its safe to say its the former!

‘Meet me at the Central Bank’, the last line of many a conversation in Ireland’s capital, ten minutes before it actually happens.

‘I’ll be the one without the skateboard’ sings Róisín, ‘Come on let’s take a ramble’ which is what seems to happen in this tune. A series of refrains, all chorus like seem to make up this song apart from one slight breakdown. It needs a little more direction I’m afraid.

A nice ditty, probably a good live song but not blowing me away.

  • Sean Dempsey Review

    sean dempsey

I did this for MusicReviewUnsigned. Direct Link HERE.

Sean Dempsey is a Maynooth based 17 year old Hiphop/Rnb/pop artist.

His album opens with ‘I Love My Music’, the production and arrangement isn’t bad but Sean falls into the old self producing problem with the vocal arrangement. ‘Hooked on You’ seems very Tinchy Stryder influenced while Will I Am’s influence can be heard on ‘Let it go’. A little bit of vocal reworking on ‘Red Alert’ could turn it into a huge hit.

The overall on the beat making/production of the album isn’t at all bad, especially when you consider Sean is only 17.

It might be an idea for Sean to try getting other backing vocalists to work with compliment his own vocals on his tracks and try mixing them slightly differently.

The next while will be interesting as Sean develops his style and blends his influences more to get his own sound but this is a good start for Sean to show his strengths and where a little bit of work is needed. I’d be thrilled if I could’ve done this at 17.

  • Reemo: Colours Review

    reemo

I wrote this for MusicReviewUnsigned Direct link HERE

Reemo are no strangers to the Irish Music Scene and ‘Colours’ released on September 26th, is their debut album.

The band could be described as fitting into the Indie Pop Rock genre, the album opens with ‘Run’, an uptempo number. ‘Colours’ features the singles ‘Chocolate Covered Gorgeous’ and ‘Sometimes’.

‘Chocolate Covered Gorgeous’ has a great bass line and sound but a little more genius in the production and overall band sound is needed to make the track reach it’s full potential.

The album also features the reworked ‘Circus’, the title track from an earlier EP and ‘Dancing Lights: The Ballad of Jacqui Caroll’ which seems to tip hat in the Duran Duran direction. More of those harmonies please.

Standout track for this reviewer is ‘Sometimes’, standing head and shoulders above the others, good build up, good hooks, nice production. The extra vocals on the track make a huge difference.

The band also include extended versions of ‘Sometimes’ and ‘Chocolate Covered Gorgeous’ on the album.. wonder why they didn’t include the tracks ‘Who you are’ and ‘Rushin’ Man’ which went Top 40.

It’s not a bad album, just an extra bit of sparkle about some hooks in the songs and instrument sounds could make all the difference.

  • AFI: Fainting Spells Review

    crash love

Every week I’m going to try and review a track that a signed band or artist is giving anyway for free. More and more artists are using this as a promotional tool in advance of a major release, all for your email address being added to their mailing list.

That’s exactly what AFI (A Fire Inside) have done ahead of the release of their new new album Crash Love which is being released on September 29 in the United States.

What do I know about AFI? Absolutely nothing

Looking at the band’s bio on their site, I’m shocked that they have been together 18 years and this will be their eighth studio album. The Bay Area band went to number one with their last album DecemberUnderground and sold nearly 200000 units in its first week, not bad going at all.. Why haven’t we heard more of these guys on this side of the Atlantic or have I been asleep?

    afi

Back to the track at hand ‘Fainting Spells’, starts with acoustic guitar and vocals reminiscent of Brian Moloko of Placebo and Morten Harket from Aha.

Full electric kicks in for the chorus, in a rock style that wouldn’t be out of place alongside Lost Prophets but the track has a little something more than your average punkrock song as the track moves between acoustic and full rock through verse chorus verse. Some clever programming provides an interesting breakdown.

The Morten Harket influence ? Melody in the pre chorus isn’t that unlike Aha’s Stay On These Roads (which I haste to add isn’t something I would hold against them.. 2 thumbs up!)

Free Music – always good! Great Free Music – Even Better!

I’ll be checking out the album.
