Sound of The Underground on The London Ear

A couple of months ago, my radio show, The London Ear, became a weekly two-hour show, which I’m really grateful for. This meant I could include more music including a new segment called ‘Sound Of The Underground.’ It’s the part of the show where I introduce listeners to London-based musicians or artists they may not be familiar with.

I play a lot of Irish music on the radio but also feel it’s important to look outwards in the world too. I live in South East London. I don’t live in a bubble, none of us do. Even if you move to a new town, you’ll discover new music there. I think it’s important to support new artists no matter where they are from. As I have a platform, I feel it is right and proper to highlight London-based artists where I can.

    Why Call It This?

Why did I call the segment Sound of The Underground? If I go on a journey anywhere in London on my own, I always have my earphones in. Most people do. So music has become the Sound of The Underground, plus there’s a great Girls Aloud song I can use as a theme.

For one, I’ve really enjoyed searching for London artists. For me, it’s a great way to find out more about what’s happening at grassroots level here in London.

    Listen on Spotify

I’ve put all the tracks I’ve featured, including this week’s from Oscar Browne, into this handy playlist for you on Spotify. Every week, the latest track featured will be added to the top of the playlist.

If you know an artist that you think I should feature on ‘Sound of The Underground’, do get in touch. I’m always on the lookout! Send an email to nessy(at)nessymon.com

    Enjoy the tunes!

    Playlist: Christmas in Ireland

About 2 years ago, I started putting a playlist together on Spotify of contemporary Irish artists playing Christmas and Winter Songs. I just left it there and didn’t share it. I thought it was now a good time to do that.

If you need a soundtrack to your festivities, I would encourage you to use this playlist. If you are a retailer or pub, use this soundtrack. Over the past couple of years, we know that musicians and venues have had a really tough time. If we can share their music, maybe even gain one new fan who buys some music, that’s a win.

    Support Irish Musicians

I know Spotify isn’t great at all with paying artists for their streams and even if we played this 24/7 for a year, it wouldn’t be enough to help financially. But, what we can do is use the tools we have to help support Irish artists and give a little back to those who kept us entertained with nightly live streams during lockdowns.

If playing this music can encourage people to support or possibly find their new favourite Irish artist, then that’s a good thing.

    Listen on Spotify.

I hope you enjoy this playlist. I’m hoping to keep adding to this over the next few Christmases.

You can listen below or go directly to the playlist here.

If you follow me on social media, you’ll know by now that the worst thing about living in London is the morning commute. I truly detest it. I hate the rammed trains.

I’m not sure whether it’s just because it’s January, or whether people are getting angrier and pushier but yesterday, I got pushed around three times from when I left work until I got home. Like proper pushed, if I were unsteady on my feet, I would have hit the ground.

So that’s why last year, I started sharing the songs I was listening to during my commute. I put a visual (photo or video) of my commute on Instagram and share a song alongside it.

You can find everything in my Insta stories which you can find here.

This is the second week of 2020 that I’ve been sharing these songs and as a lover of new music, I try to share as much as I can.

Duke Dumont shares Nessymon's Insta Story

It was lovely last week, when I shared Duke Dumont‘s new track, Therapy. He actually shared it on his own stories and said:

    ‘Funny thing .
I made this record with the sense of escapism I used to go to in my mind, when I had to commute from Willesden to Elephant & Castle for work.’

That’s exactly why I share the tracks I listen to. I’m glad other people get it and delighted that one of the artists I was listening to got it straight it away.

These are the songs I’m listening to each morning, you can listen to the playlist directly on Spotify or in the box below.

Hope you enjoy, let me know what you’re listening to!

It’s absolutely no secret that I think that one of the worse things about London is the commuting on the trains. I mean, no easy way to put it, I bloody hate it.

Squished trains, smelly armpits, rude arseholes who just won’t take their backpacks off and so hit you in the face. Yip, hate it.

If I can I tend to try and get the commute done a little bit earlier than the majority at our local train station. I could get a later train but it would be more squishy. I’ve seen a physical fight on the platform where one guy couldn’t / wouldn’t move down the train so he was pulled out the open door by some one on the platform.  Putting it nicely, life is too short for that shit.

So, a couple of months ago, to keep me busy on the train and avoid contact (if possible) with all the squishers,  I decided that I would start sharing a song I was listening to on my Instagram stories.  I put them all in a highlight for some reason. So I’ve decided to create a playlist on Spotify, imaginatively called ‘NessysCommute’.

Everyday I add a song with an accompanying visual to my Insta story and then add the track to the top of my Spotify playlist.

I’ve shared so many before I thought of adding them to a playlist, that I’ve run out of space in the Insta highlights. Here’s the current highlight with all the visuals.

    So, hope you enjoy!
