Safe Home Ireland – Home Thoughts From Abroad

I don’t often get the chance to chat about myself really (which is why I should probably blog more). So, when the nice folk at Safe Home Ireland, asked if I would like to take part in their ‘Home Thoughts from Abroad‘ series.

From their website: ‘Safe Home Ireland is an emigrant support service. We provide advice, information and housing assistance to people who are thinking of returning or moving to Ireland.’ You can read more here.

When I’m interviewing people for my radio show, I often do draw from my own experiences when asking questions but an interview isn’t about the interviewer, it’s about the person being interviewed. Which is why, I guess, when I do write anything about myself I often wonder if it’s the correct thing to write or if I should stay shtum about a subject.

Realistically, I’m too old for that crap anymore. If you like me, you like me. If you don’t, well that’s none of my business. There are more important things to worry about in the world.

    Ireland From Afar

So, that meant that I really enjoyed sitting down and answering all the questions posed by Safe Home Ireland. It also made me think a lot about Ireland, possible returns to Ireland in the future and if, indeed, I ever would permanently live there again. I don’t have a crystal ball. No one can predict the future but it definitely got me thinking about my relationship with Ireland.

But all those thoughts are for another day. Right now, I’d recommend you grab a cuppa and head over to Safe Home Ireland for a nice read. Thanks to the the gang at Safe Home Ireland for letting me share my musings.

The London Ear 260 // UPPBEAT

Hello! Welcome to this week’s episode of The London Ear.

Living away from home is a weird thing. I try to keep up with music in London and with Irish music at home, not wanting to lose my connection with it. But, I’m not there going to gigs in The Academy on a Tuesday night, I will miss things, I know that.

    Chat with UPPBEAT

I was delighted recently when UPPBEAT got in touch on Insta. We were chatting away and he sent me his new track. I was blown away. I couldn’t wait to get the chance to play this on the radio for you.

The production is massive, it sounds huge but the lyrical content what was what really got me. UPPBEAT straight out tackles toxic masculinity and looks at suicide in the West of Ireland in his track. The upbeat track (no pun intended) delivers a beautiful juxtaposition with the lyrics. This is an hugely important Irish track.

I’m delighted that UPPBEAT joined me on the programme today to chat about his life, song and his career so far and his now famous, nay, infamous deliveroo jacket branding.

He’s a good bloke and deserves much success. You can find out more about him on Facebook and on Insta.

  • New website this week

I’ve been a little quiet this week, there have been reasons.

I’m in the middle of the transition to nessymon.com and getting everything ready for the switch.

I’ve also been busy working on thing for my new nessycast and getting a theme tune together.

I’m really excited about the switchover.. whoo hoo! The countdown is on!

  • Des Bishop at The Twisted Pepper

On Saturday night last I had the pleasure of attending a warm up show for Des Bishop‘s appearance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The gig took place upstairs in The Twisted Pepper in Abbey St, Dublin, a nice little room, cosy, and intimate for an audience of about 50 people. As it was Saturday night too, everyone was ready for a laugh.

I’m not going to gove away any of Des’ jokes from his show, ‘My Dad was nearly James Bond’, that wouldn’t be fair. What I will say is that Des takes the topic of cancer and somehow manages to make us laugh, despite the subject matter.

The show is funny, nostalgic and what I loved about the warmup was, occasionally Des let his onstage guard down to show a softer human side, something we often forget about these funnyguys.

Des gave away tickets for the event on Twitter (where I got them) and on Facebook. A great way to get ready for Edinburgh and in these broke times, a free night out. Tickets for a full Irish tour are on sale now.. go see it.

Thanks Des, best of luck in Edinburgh.
