    Lawless: Movie Review

Lawless_bannerSet in prohibition era Virginia USA, Lawless is based on the true story of the Boundurant brothers, rogue moonshiners who have a good thing going until the authorities send in a new deputy to straighten out Franklin County.

As things unravel, violence flares and the brother’s relatively peaceful set up leaves them with more than one war wound thanks to a deputy who wants to get a share of the profits. Resistance only drives Charles Rake (Guy Pearce) to achieve his goal his way by any means necessary.

Tom Hardy plays the level headed ring leader brother, Forrest, a man of few words who gets things done and has a knack for not getting killed. His brother, Howard, (Jason Clarke) is fan of their own merchandise. The coming of age of youngest brother Jack is played brilliantly by Shia LeBeouf. His story charts him falling for the right girl, which is a problem when you’re the bad boy, being introduced to the family business, building it up and ultimately being a cog in its downfall.

It’s beautifully directed by John Hillcoat, who also directed ‘The Road’ and he shows fantastic attention to detail here. The screenplay for the film was written by Nick Cave, who also gets a cameo. There’s also a supporting role for Gary Oldman as gangster from the city, Floyd Banner.

Despite being on the wrong side of the law, you can’t help but root for the brothers. Their parts are played so well but also Guy Pearse has brilliantly turned his character, along with his weird haircut, into the most horrible character in the movies this year.

Lawless is bloody, it’s violent but when ladies enter the brother’s lives, it’s also quite tender. It’s a really good piece of film making. If you miss this, you will be missing one of the best movies of the year.

Tune of the Week 07/09/2012: Toy Soldier

This week’s Tune of the Week comes from Cork based Toy Soldier. I first heard of Toy Soldier a while back when the band was in its infancy. I spoke to Cian Walsh on Culture Cafe Episode 26 on DCUfm. Since then the band has evolved, become a three piece and have been putting a hell of a lot of work in, gigging across Ireland and the UK and Tom Robinson loves them, so there!

Toy Soldier is taken from their album, ‘Calling Up The Dusk’, which will be released on September 21. It’s Electro, it’s rock, it’s gritty, it has balls! This week’s Tune of the Week is Natural Diaster from Toy Soldier.

  • Robbie Williams: Dublin Charity Concert Ticket Fiasco

Robbie Williams: Dublin Charity Concert Ticket Fiasco

FINAL UPDATE AT BOTTOM OF POST.

Lots of explaining to do with this. I applied for tickets for Robbie Williams‘ Charity Gig in The 02 in Dublin on September 14th and received this from tickets@robbiewilliams.com about twenty minutes ago. Mess, fiasco and lots of other relevant words come to mind.

I’ll be honest, before this I was quite psyched about seeing Robbie again. I’d just like to point out that at NO STAGE did I receive an email stating that I won tickets for Barrowlands in Glasgow. Here’s what I got today.

    Dear Fan,

Ticketmaster regrets to inform you that due to a database error, you will have been advised that you were successful in the ticket ballot for the Robbie Williams performance at Glasgow Barrowland. However, this was incorrect as you actually applied for tickets for the Dublin concert.

As such, and in the interests of fairness to all Robbie Williams fans who applied for tickets for these two concerts, we have declared these ballots invalid and will be running them again shortly. You will receive the result of the new ballot by the end of today and we will be extending the booking period to midday on Friday 7th September to ensure you still get a fair chance to purchase.

Ticketmaster would like to sincerely apologise to Robbie and his fans for any disappointment and inconvenience caused. All ballot applicants will receive further communication shortly.

Here’s the first original email received earlier today:

Here’s the second email received today:

    RobbieWilliams Ballot Update

I’m not blaming Robbie or his team for this, it was obviously down to Ticketmaster to allocate the tickets. Hopefully they’ll get it sorted tonight or tomorrow and indeed give a large wad of cash to the charities that Robbie is playing the gigs for.

Update 21:58 And so finally tonight this came to its conclusion when I received this mail. Ah well, no Robbie for me next week.
