Tune of the Week 31/08/2012: Harts

HartsHarts is a solo artist from Melbourne Australia, whose music has been described as ‘fusing Indie Rock with Post-Disco, Electro and Funk, with emphasis on explosive energy and contagious melodies’. He plays all the instruments himself and his first single ‘Back to the Shore’ was also picked up by the legendary Triple J in Sydney.

‘All Too Real’ is his first proper single and is taken from his forthcoming EP ‘Offtime’ which was mixed by Lars Stalfors of The Mars Volta.

I’m really liking this single and going on what ‘Back to the Shore’ sounds like also, it bodes well for the EP. This week’s Tune of the Week is Harts and ‘All Too Real’

    Villagers: The Waves (Video)

So here’s the new video for Villagers‘ ‘The Waves’ and sound of Villagers has certainly moved on since ‘Becoming A Jackal’, with its electronic twinkly bits and beeps. At the time of writing, I’m not entirely sure what I think of this, the dischord between the vocals and the instrumentation at the start of the track, irks the life out of me. But I love the song when it really kicks in.

It’s available to download on iTunes now and will be available on vinyl in October via Domino Records. No news of a second album release date or title yet.

Villagers will also be on tour with Grizzly Bear across the UK and some of Europe this Autumn. Here are the dates.

  • A Thousand Words: an Exhibition by Mags Harnett at The Copper House Gallery

A Thousand Words: an Exhibition by Mags Harnett at The Copper House Gallery

The fine people at The Copper House Gallery never seem to sit still for a minute. They’ve just announced another exhibition, this time it’s ‘A Thousand Words’ by Mags Harnett. What do we need to know? Here’s some answers.

    What is ‘A Thousand Words’?

Thousand Words is a series of images in pen, ink and rain on paper. Each piece is a vibrant palimpsest of time and colour; themes central to the artist’s work. Mags Harnett transcribes thoughts as they flow on to the page in a stream of consciousness style, instinctively linking colour to sound, emotions, the world around her. In this series each piece represents a length of time in life and a reflection of moods or observations. Layers of text in different shades of colour are superimposed on one another to create a palimpsest on each page. These words woven together create a concentration of text and colour.

I don’t know Mags Harnett, who is she?

Mags Harnett worked briefly in advertising in Dublin before going to live in Paris and later Cologne . She read French and German at Trinity College Dublin graduating with an honors degree in 1998 and went on to study Fine Art for five years at l’Ecole Supérieure des Beaux Arts de Tours, France, where she graduated with an honors degree in 2005. She joined the Bled group of artists in Saint Pierre des Corps in 2009 and worked as an independent translator and teacher (University Francois Rabelais and L’Ecole Brassart in Tours) before returning to her native Dublin in 2011 where she lives with her two children and works in her studio-attic.

So when is the exhibition on?

A Thousand Words an exhibition by Mags Harnett runs in the Archive, upstairs at The Copper House Gallery from 5th September – 22nd September 2012. Admission is free and all are welcome

There you have it, if you’ve never been to The Copper House Gallery before, it’s situated at St Kevin’s Cottages, Synge Street, Dublin 8. You can get directions here
