  • Interview with Fionn Regan

Fionn ReganFionn Regan‘s new album ‘100 Acres of Sycamore’ is released today, little more than a year since his last release ‘The Shadow of An Empire’.  I caught up with Fionn and chatted about his new album as well as getting a glimpse into how he approaches his art.

A chance meeting with actress Anna Friel at Benicassim in 2010 was the catalyst for ‘100 Acres of Sycamore’ and the album came together when Friel invited Regan to stay in her house. ‘It was very fast, sometimes when you’re a writer it’s like that, lightning strikes, the stars align for whatever reason they do’ says Fionn, ‘It definitely felt that this time period and the way it came together is really exciting for me. I had done a lot of work on the production side of it but the songs were very fast, they flew like liquid gold.’

If you get an opportunity just to go somewhere and write, how do you get into mindset?

‘I think you kind of are an aerial or a transistor, you do feel like a lightning rod. I don’t think you can plan it, I think you have to be open to receive it. You can close yourself off to so many things without realizing it and you can open yourself if you think hard enough about it. (more…)

  • Tune Of The Week 12/08/2011: Young Bross

I met this guy during the week and was impressed with this track. Audio Production and Video were both done here in Dublin. Video by BetterFly. Good dancehall/hiphop track and great use of live footage and motion graphics in the video. Yong Bross was born in Nigeria, grew up in South Africa and is now living in Dublin. This week’s Tune Of The Week is Young Bross with ‘Tell Them Say’.

    Nessycast #8: Nikolai Bonds

For the eighth Nessycast I had the pleasure of speaking to Nikolai Bonds, who is part of Airplane Mode, a US based group who mix hip hop and electronica.

Nikolai’s family is also part of baseball royalty, his Dad, Barry leads the all time Home Run board and played left field for my beloved San Francisco Giants. His grandad is another legendary baseball name, Bobby Bonds.

  • Sam Jackson – Live at The National Concert Hall

sam jackson nchThe ever so talented Sam Jackson is playing the National Concert Hall this Friday, August 12th.. Why should you go?

Sam is about to release his debut album ‘Sharp and Flat’ and this is a little preview gig on what you can expect from the classically trained pianoman. Most of the material for the album was written in New Zealand and was recorded in locations like Fiji and Thailand as well as dear old Ireland.

Sam’s original music has been used in TV, film and in theatre, he has worked extensively with Druid and The Abbey and his compositions have been featured on Broadway, London and Japan. He has also worked with Tony award winning director Gary Hynes. If that wasn’t enough he also plays keys with Moya Brennan.

The show on Friday starts at 8.30pm and tickets are a measly €5. Joining Sam will be Dave Mooney on bass (another extremely talented guy) and Shane O’Donovan. Sam is an amazing musician and composer and has promised “an open forum where anything can happen musically”.
