  • Washed Out: Within and Without Review

King of Chillwave, Ernest Greeen’s first full length album opens with ‘Eyes Be Closed’ and sets the tone for the rest of the album. Blissful, dreamlike, electronica with airy vocals and harmonies.

Hailing from Perry Georgia, Greene has previously released some singles and E.P.s but for his debut has teamed up with Ben Allen who has previously worked with Animal Collective and Gnarls Barkley. The result is quite simply, stunning.

The album leads us to a totally sun-drenched sensual summer vibe and seems slightly more sophisicated than Greene’s Life of Leisure E.P. Swirly synth sounds and lethargic beats come together an envelop the listener. (more…)

  • Made in Temple Bar – The Trailer!

As I told you a few days ago, from July 15th – 24th, the nice people at Temple Bar Cultural Trust are teaming up with more than 20 of its cultural neighbours, over 100 artists and performers and some of the most exciting creative companies in Ireland to celebrate 20 years of unique culture and regeneration in Dublin’s Cultural Quarter.

Well now, they’ve gone and made a video for it, really clever and fun, everything you want a celebration to be! Good job guys!

  • Henrietta Game: Black Ship Review

Henrietta Game Black Ship The release of an album used to be an event. In the days before instant download, we had to wait. Anticipation would build.

Henrietta Game beautifully build the anticipation with the ‘Intro’ to their debut album ‘Black Ship’. Glockenspiel and cello combine and are gradually joined by guitar and choral section which build for the entire one minute and 32 seconds. It’s a perfect intro to the whispering start of the title track.

I don’t think there’s anyone quite like Henrietta Game, their use of classic organic instruments and vocal harmonies is simply stunning. Behind these though, we find a treasure trove of lyrics and production tricks.  One such of these is on the track ‘Black Ship’, where a percussive sound seems to echo the sea’s waves. (more…)

  • Extras Wanted: Open Casting Weekend

movie extrasHere’s one for the wannabe actors among us, or anyone who would like to see their mug on the telly!

Movieextras.ie are holding an open casting weekend from Friday 15th July – Sunday 17th July at the Westbury Hotel, just off Grafton Street in Dublin.

As well as maybe ending up taking part in a production it can be a great way to meet people working in the TV and Film industry and if you’re chosen a great way of finding out what actually does go behind the scenes.

Movieextras.ie is now working on its 1000th production and have been involved in productions such as The Tudors, Fair City and are currently working on Shadow Dancer, a new film starring Aidan Gillen, Clive Owen and the X-Files’ Gillian Anderson. Hell! I’d sign up to even be able to be in the same room as Clive Owen!

(Edit 15/7/2011: When I first got this information there was no indication you needed to pay for this. Heck, I’ve been to open castings before and I never had to pay for the priviledge. However, it seems to be the case that you have to pay a years membership anyway. This is from a PR email I got:

‘All are welcome to attend the open casting weekend. The cost for an individual one year membership is €99.95 and for a special family package is €299 (for up to 6 members) and includes 3 professional photographs. Those who are unable to attend the Open Casting Weekend can register online at www.MovieExtras.ie.’

To be honest I now think if MovieExtras.ie are charging you to take part in open casting then they need to rename what they are doing and clearly explain. This is basically another recruitment drive for them.)
