  • Interview with Alex Winston

alex winstonLast night, Alex Winston played her first Irish gig in The Sugar Club. She plays a type of 60’s Motown tinged pop and has been compared to Lykke Li and Feist. Her song ‘Choice Notes’ is currently being used by two companies in their advertising campaigns. I caught up with a very smiley, chatty, Alex just before soundcheck.

This is third gig on your tour and you’ve already played in a library in Lancaster and are now about to play in an old cinema theatre. How are the gigs going and what’s the strangest place you’ve ever played?

‘It’s been going really well, I think the library had to be the strangest. When you think of playing in a library, well, for my personally, I think of being in High School in Battle of The Bands and four of your friends out there clapping and the lights are on and they’re like ‘Hurry Up! Be Quiet!’ but this was really fun. It was an awesome sound system and everyone came out from the town. It was a great time. We were drinking whiskey in a library, which seemed very unnatural (laughs). It was definitely the most interesting place I’ve played this far.’

  • John Edgar Voe: Western Notes Review

John Edgar VoeThese guys are clever, John Edgar Voe isn’t a bloke, it’s a band. Led by Martin J Corrigan, the band also features one Robyn G Shiels and members of Alloy Mental.

John Edgar Voe’s sound is definitely country tinged, the first track, ‘Highwayman’ has nice use of lap steel, Corrigan though, refers to it as Fermanicana. Clever. Americana from Fermanagh, which is exactly what it is.

‘Highwayman’ has echoes of  Johnny Cash, which is never a bad thing but pronounication of some of the lyrics, region, drug, make this distinctly JEV.  ‘The Conscript’ uses clever lyrics to build the story of our hero. The mid tempo track features laid back vocals as we hear the pain in the singers immaculately delivered vocals. This almost has an anthemic feel with an uplifting positive chorus. I really like this track. (more…)

  • So I Took a Few Days Off Last Week…

Beefeaters at Buckingham PalaceFor the first time in ages, I managed to get a few days off with a valid passport, no ash cloud, I headed to London.

Nothing too much was planned, took a trip to the BBC Television Centre, spent a few hours in the Tate Modern and chilled by the Lock in Camden.

On Friday night, I decided to go to Green Park and maybe take a few photos of Buckingham Palace in the dark, which I’ve never done. As I go to the bottom of Constitution Hill, it started to rain. Outside the Palace, the Beefeaters with their furry hats hurried into their little huts and looked like collectible figurines, still in their packets.  (more…)
