  • Interview with Sam From Twin Atlantic

Twin AtlanticTwin Atlantic are an interesting band, they’ve supported some amazing acts, Angels and Airwaves and My Chemical Romance amongst others. They are signed to Red Bull Records and they sing in their own Scottish accent. Their new album ‘Free’ produced by Gil Norton (Foo Fighters, Pixies) is out this Friday and they play The Academy 2 this Thursday. I caught up with their chatty lead singer Sam McTrusty on a sunny Glasgow day.

For us, here, based in Ireland, we get to hear a bit about the music scene in London and Manchester through the media but we don’t hear a lot about what happens in Glasgow, give us an insight.

‘Well, I suppose, it’s kinda like a big community of people and I think that stems from it being a working class area and everyone there using music as an escape, like at the weekend or gigs at night time. The cool factor is less there in Glasgow and I think that there’s no animosity between certain scenes. I mean, indie bands don’t hate the metal bands and all that sort of stuff. It’s just like everyone helps each other up the ladder. It probably comes from being separated from the music scene down south, that’s really where it all really kicks off where you would get a record deal or anything like that and it results in bands been given time and space to grow and become an actual real band. Not that bands down south aren’t, I just think there’s that bit more honesty installed in you if you’re given a chance to develop away from the pressures of (the media and spotlight?) people who are out to make money out of ye’.

  • Brother: Live At The Academy 2 Review

BrotherIt’s a while since there have been some real bad boys on the indie scene. Then along came Brother. Cocky, loud mouthed and pissing people off before they’ve even released anything. Claiming that they only will have singles on their album, the Slough outfit came to The Academy 2 on Tuesday 18th April. This was the perfect chance for them to quash the haters.

The venue was remarkably quiet as The Mighty Stef played a solo acoustic set. The Dublin troubadour played some tracks from his current album ‘TMS & The Baptists’. Stef’s sense of humour was full steam ahead stopping mid song as the gig photographer took a few shots. The Mighty One reminding the photographer of the best side to shoot a larger fella. Very entertaining, pity more people didn’t see him. (more…)

  • Fia Rua: Falling Time Review

fiaruaThis is one of those albums that has been knocking around my desk for a while. ‘Falling Time’ is the current album from Galway based experiemental folk artist Eoghan Burke, better known as Fia Rua.

Opening with the title track ‘Falling Time’, an uptempo track with fiddles, guitars, everything you’d expect to hear on a folk album Fia Rua though is a little different as contemporary production creeps in, with little noises and hooks. You’ll be singing this all day.

There are a few guests on the album including Jinx Lennon, who on Shakier, spits out lines like ‘you got to keep it raw, awkward and real if you want to survive the next twenty four years’. (more…)

  • Indie Week Ireland

Indie WeekI just got the full line up for Indie Week which kicks off in Sweeney Mongrels on Dame Street, Dublin on May 11th with 10 bands playing on the night. it’s a 4 day music festival taking place in Dublin and Belfast with the winners of the Canadian Indie Week, These Electric Lives will be headlining every night. Looking forward to seeing some bands I haven’t seen before and a couple I haven’t seen in a while.

    Here’s the blurb:

Based in Toronto, Indie Week is in its 8th year and is a twice-annual music festival that takes place in Ireland each spring and Canada each fall. In Ireland, we seek promising up-and-comers, showcase them before industry, and bring the best home with us for Indie Week Canada 2011.

The Canadian festival showcases 160+ acts over 4 nights, and in 2010, bands from a total of 10 countries were involved. The focus of the festival is to showcase emerging indie acts while opening the doors to foreign markets. Indie Week Canada has hosted an Irish showcase for 3 years, always to a sold out crowd. And each year an Irish act has gained Canadian management – not a bad success rate!

In Ireland the festival is growing and we aim to expand to a similar format (more…)
