    dcufm studio micEpisode 51.

This was Judgement Day, well according to the TV series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. For me it was Gremlins in the system and I had to play my music and interviews from my netbook. Then my netbook crashes. Typical.

Two hours after I finished this show though, DCU Media Production Society, which DCUfm is a part of, won Best Society in a large college. The Best Society in Ireland. This is an absolutely amazing feat and I’m delighted and proud to be a part of it.

Here’s what happened on the show:

    1. DJ Flip & Freezemaster Slick: Crossroads:

    2. Storyfold: Trick of Light

    3. Brother: Homesick (This week’s Recommended Free Legal Download available from acidlove.net)

    4. Art Brut: Lost Weekend

    5. Manic Street Preachers: It’s Not War

    6. Two Door Cinema Club: I Can Talk

    7. Peter, Bjorn & John: Breaker Breaker

    8. Interview with Sam from Twin Atlantic

    9. Twin Atlantic: Edit Me

    10. Interview with Zach from Portugal. The Man

    11. Portugal. The Man: The Dead Dog

    12. Frankie & The Heartstrings: That Postcard

Ok, it was longer than an hour but I really enjoyed it.Thanks to Twin Atlantic and Portugal The Man.

Thanks to everyone who got in touch and wanted me to ask Sam from Twin Atlantic some more questions. Unfortunately I couldn’t because I recorded the interview earlier in the afternoon. But I promise I will try to get him to answer some more questions.

  • Tune Of The Week: 22/04/2011

This week has been good for Conor J O’Brien. Villagers has been nominated for an Ivor Novello Award for ‘Becoming a Jackal’ in the’ Best Song Musically and Lyrically’ category.

But I’m not making ‘Becoming a Jackal’ Tune of the Week, no that’s going to the new single ‘The Pact’ which is a glorious piece of enchantment. It comes with a delightful video made by Myles O’Reilly, who makes fantastic use of depth of field. Love it.

The Pact is out on may 13th and Villagers are playing lots of gigs this Summer including Sea Sessions in June  and Marley Park with Beach House on July 23rd.

  • Yngve and The Innocent: Draw A Line Review

DRAW A LINE - YNGVE & THE INNOCENTSometimes there are musicians who’s artwork comes to mind straight away. Yngve & The Innocent are one. Their covers are artworks in themselves. Draw A Line is their current single and has a half man/half cockerel (or maybe hen) on the cover.

The London based band have a fine knack for writing interesting folk rock songs. Draw a Line is a fantastic midtempo summer song with a lovely piano line and a beautiful lazy guitar riff.

It’s lovely to hear all the instruments, not processed, not effected, just in their organic state. It’s refreshing to hear non musical noises from the instruments. Imagine: Summer’s Day, band playing, using the bar Joanna, doors open, sitting, enjoying the sun. Perfection.

Changing Tracks, incorporates piano and a beautiful jewellery box sound, which I imagine is a glockenspiel. This is more downbeat and darker that it’s predecessor. At 7 minutes and 10 seconds it is a bit lengthy but there’s enough variation in what’s going on to the listener interested for the duration.

  • Art Brut: Lost Weekend Review

Art Brut- Lost WeekendRaw or Rough art describes the genre of painting ‘Art Brut’ and it pretty much does the same for the British/German band of the same name.

Their new single ‘Lost Weekend’ produced by Black Francis is out on May 13th with the Album ‘BRILLIANT TRAGIC!’ out a week later.

Previous knowledge of Art Brut would no doubt have Eddie Argos’ shouty vocal style and lyrics as the dominant factor. Here though, Argos almost sings in a apologetic nature about a, well, ‘Lost Weekend’ as opposed to ‘Good Weekend’  or even ‘Bad Weekend’ as previously recorded by the band. (more…)
