  • Rewind: Movie Review

rewind_poster_Directed by PJ Dillion, Rewind tells the story of Karen (Amy Huberman) a recovering addict, who has moved on with her life. Enter Karl (Allen Leech) her ex boyfriend who appears on the scene and turns her new life upside down. A roadtrip means Karen must make some decisions along the way in order to protect her new life and family.

Huberman received ‘Best Actress’ at this year’s IFTAs for her role and it’s easy to see why. As Karen she puts in a commanding performance, torn between the past and the present. She shows herself off as a great actress, much more than we could ever see in The Clinic. There’s something about Allen Leech’s character that irks me from the start, you have a feeling this isn’t good, you want Karen to walk away, she can’t. (more…)

  • Carosel: I’m Sorry Demo

Carosel - Im sorryHere’s the new demo from Irish Parisiens, Carosel. This seems to be more poignant and heartfelt than their previous material.

I’ve already told the band what I think. (Twitter is a great thing). This is quite like something from Dido. For some reason my music production head has been on for the past few days.  Get a nice drumbeat, ala ‘Here with Me’, nice bass sound and leave the rest with its sparse production. There are some gorgeous guitar lines and sounds in there already. Top class demo!

    Beautiful..

  • The Riot Tapes: Photograph Review

I actually wasn’t going to write about this cos I basically did a review of it when I played it on the Culture Cafe on Thursday night but a few people who know my kind of music, asked me what I thought so here goes.

There are always a few comparisons and stereotypes a band will get with a female singer backed by a few blokes. The opening ‘Stupid Girl’ Garbage/Clash-like drum beat on ‘Photograph’ doesn’t dispel these. The feedback guitar intro then dips into a more Texas-like verse.

Elaine Doyle’s vocals are strong and commanding, I can’t figure out whether its her vocals or the vocal production that reminds me of Sharleen Spiteri. It’s enough to make me listen a couple of times to try and figure out if the vocal lines are reverbed or doubletracked. </nerd>  (more…)

  • Interview with Vinnie from Cry Before Dawn

CRY BEFORE DAWNCry Before Dawn were one of the great Irish musical hopes of the late 1980’s and released two albums ‘Crimes of Conscience’ and ‘Witness for the World’.

This weekend saw the band play together on a stage for the first time in eighteen years. I caught up with Vinnie Doyle from the band during the week. First question I had was ‘Why Now ?’

‘I think it just felt right now. Brendan had been in Switzerland playing traditional music and Pat moved back to Wexford. He was in Sweden, I think for eight years. I gave up playing music altogether. It wasn’t a falling out of love with music for me. Life gets in the way sometimes, you know important things like family. But now feels like the right time for us to be playing music together again.’
