  • Sanskrit: Midweek Blues Review

sanskrit Monaghan band Sanzskrit are back with a new single. It’s the first we’ve heard of them since debut, After the Wedding, which was a good solid start for the band.

‘Midweek Blues’ threw me off to start, it’s a lot more poppy and mainstream than I was expecting. The accordion sound coupled with the bass sound, give it a definite Oirish sound which I’m not a huge fan of. But it’s a damn catchy track, you hit the chorus before you’ve even realised and you’ll be humming it all day.

If the guys box clever here, with a little more sparseness in the production they could find themselves in Noah & The Whale/ Mumford & Sons territory. It will be interesting to see what direction the new album, ‘Carving Our Names in Trees’, takes. (more…)

  • The Prodigy: World’s On Fire

This looks like something not to be missed. For one night only across 70 cinemas in Europe, Africa and Australia, The Prodigy will screen World’s On Fire. A film recorded live at Milton Keynes Bowl in July 2010.

Going by the trailer, it looks complete full on high octane stuff. Liam from the band has mixed the audio for 5.1 surround sound. World’s on Fire was directed by Paul Dugdale at the Warrior’s Dance Festival.

  • Lay Me Down Softly at Project Arts Centre

Written and directed by Billy Roche, Lay Me Down Softly tells the story of Delaney’s Travelling Roadshow and gives an insight of Irish Life in the 1960’s.

The set and story set up immediately brought the film ‘The Playboys’ to mind. Lay Me Down Softly, though, used the background of a boxing ring to look at the characters’ relationships.

Upon entering the theatre you are immediately thrust into the 60’s and location. Red drapes and canvases printed with The Academy emblem adorn the walls, while late fifties/early sixties music is playing. Kudos must go to Set Designer, Fionnuala McMullin for a great set. I’d love to know where you got a tin of Ovaltine. (more…)

  • Milan Jay: Gig Tonight and Free Download

Milan JayI meant to write about this during the week, D’oh! If you’re around Dublin tonight, March 19th, you should pop down to Whelans. Milan Jay will be taking to the stage with special guests At last an Atlas. Plus it’s a measly 5 euro in..

I was chuffed to have the first play of Milan Jay’s new single ‘Time to leave Computers Behind’ on Culture Cafe last week. It’s taken from the 2nd EP in a trilogy called ‘To The Night and Sky’. It’s a guitar driven track but you can hear little electronic buzzes and swhirls in the second half of the track.

Milan Jay is turning into a really interesting act. With previous releases sounding more electronica based and this more indie sounding, (actually all the tracks sound different to each other) the next tracks released will be interesting to see what direction they take. You can download ‘Time To Leave Computers Behind’ for free from Bandcamp or directly below.
