  • MGB: For The Ones We Knew Review

MACHINE GUN BABY coverMBG are back with a new abbreviated initialised name and a 5 track EP. The four piece have grown up since their debut ‘Yes I’ll Wait’ but now the Kings of Leon influence has taken over a little too much methinks.

After the first track, ‘Judgement Day’, the KOL wears a tad on the ears. The band are good musicians and production is good. This just feels a little bit by the book. There are elements throughout ‘On My Way’ that are reminiscent of White Lies while ‘The Rescue’ shows the vocal influence of Arcade Fire.

Last track on the EP is ‘On The Fence’ and is exactly where I am about MGB. The ‘live’ track while good and showing a slightly different side of the band, especially with percussion, has more whelps and whoops at the start than many MTV unplugged sessions. A little bit of overkill.

Musically and lyrically, you can see MBG developing as a band, they need, though to define their sound to stand out from the crowd.

  • Stephanie Rainey: The One Review

Stephanie Rainey‘The One’ is the debut single from Stephanie Rainey. The Cork chaunteuse has a clear crisp vocals and the track is reminiscent of early Kelly Clarkson with a slight AOR twinge. It’s a mid tempo track and a really good debut. Rainey writes well for her voice and production on the track is very clean, almost too clean, a nice dirty guitar slightly higher in the mix would do the trick. As a debut single though, this shows Rainey as a competent songwriter.

‘Hold On’ builds up beautifully and shows Stephanie Rainey as potentially a fantastic artist. On this track Rainey shows variations in her voice and understanding of a decent song structure. I’d like to hear a slightly grittier musical backing to counterbalance Rainey’s pure vocals but this is a great start from the Cork lady.

  • Stjepan Hauser and Luka Sulic: Smooth Criminal

A little treat for you seeing as it’s Sunday. Amazing methinks!

  • Tune of the Week: 18/02/2011

I was introduced to these guys by David from Calling All Astronauts during a conversation on Twitter. Really like them, kinda remind me of what The Beat Poets were like once upon a time.

This week’s Tune of the Week is Sound of Guns with Architects.
