  • Digital Socket Awards: Shortlist Announced

February 3rd is the date for the inaugural Digital Socket Awards, celebrating all that is good and amazing in the Irish music Scene and what stood out in 2010.  I’m extremely chuffed and honoured to be one of the 26 judges.

The shortlists for all 14 categories were announced today and well as some details about the event itself. Music on the night will be provided by two brilliant acts, Groom and Meljoann, who themselves had a great 2010. MC for the night will be comedian Gareth Stack.

There will also be two very special guests, one will be announced soon, the other.. you’ll have to turn up on the night to find out..

A limited number of tickets are available with proceeds going to Aware..

Here are the full shortlists:  (more…)

  • Tune of the Week: 14/1/2011

This week’s Tune of the Week was between three acts: Neon Trees, The Vaccines and these guys.  So why The Naked and Famous? Punching In A Dream is a great track with hints of MGMT but they’ve also just announced a gig in Dublin.  Catch them on March 5th in Crawdaddy in Dublin.

  • Poorhouse: Cuid B

Poorhouse BI love the idea of this. I have been known myself to do a sean nós version of ‘Into the Groove’ and ‘Losing my Religion’. (Even funnier when done while working in a bar in London).

The tagline has to be one of the best around: Party like its 1845!

    Here’s the blurb:

The second Poorhouse takes place on Friday 28 January from 9pm til late in Pantibar, Capel Street in Dublin.

The first one was a mixture of “traditional” performance from haunting sean nós to a trad version of “Like a Virgin” and a leaving cert irish listening test.

The next one will have poetry, song, performance and set dancing and already has a huge list of performers signed up. It should be great.

Brilliant idea for a night.. Here’s the promo video (after the jump!) (more…)

  • (Gotta Have) George Michael: Faith Remastered

George-Michael-FaithAs a George Michael Uberfan, it filled me with delight and glee to see that his first solo album, 1987’s Faith was getting a re-master and re-release.

What was even more mouth watering was that for the first time, I would be able to get all the B sides and remixes on CD. I have them all on 7inch vinyl already. I have Faith on CD, vinyl and cassette.
