  • Revolution For Dogs: Baptism of Fire Review

revolution for dogsDublin stalwarts Revolution For Dogs have just released their debut, ‘Baptism of Fire’. The album includes a number of previous singles and this collection brings all the tracks together for maximum impact.

There’s only one way to play this album, yep, loud. It starts with ‘Mission to the Sun’, a cyber rock song with a pumping bass line and swirling synth sounds. The synth feeling continues into ‘Home’ where its met head on by prog rock, making quite an interesting sound.

Produced by Liam Mulvaney, this ten track album really doesn’t have a bad song on it. The band don’t mince their words either, which is nice. ‘Tommy’ tells the story of poor auld Tommy who goes nuts and kills the neighbours. And that’s just the first verse. It’s a dark driving track with some great drumming. It’s a no bullshit rock album which veers from prog rock to indie stopping off at some drug infused gems (Blondie). Think strings, bells and Lucy in the Sky.. and you’ll have a rough idea. (more…)

DJ Earworm: United State of Pop 2010

It’s becoming a bit of a tradition to get a end of year remix/mash up from DJ Earworm, featuring Billboard’s Top 25 songs of the year. I’m not sure anything could pass last year’s remix but after a few listens this is definitely a grower.

  • George Michael: December Song

December SongWhen it’s still relevant I’m going to write a few words but firstly you must be made aware that your humble scribe has been an überfan since early 1984.

Anyway, first question is why George has decided to re-release ‘December Song’ again? Probably because of the bit of publicity he got after getting out of jail. But really? Last Christmas was released in 84,85,86 and got into the Top 50 on each occasion. Here’s where I wonder about ‘December Song’, why was it officially released? It was given away as a free download on December 25th 2008 from GeorgeMichael.com and was officially released in 2009 as a single but couldn’t be found on CD in Dublin city . It was re-released two weeks ago and low and behold I bought the two different packages. Yes, I’m a sucker.. but it’s George.

So what about the music? ‘December Song’ is a festive tune with carol singers and jingle bells, the kind of gentle song that plays as snow (nice romantic snow, not blizzards) falls. George is a master at harmonising his own vocals and coming up with great vocal melodies. Perhaps I know this track a little too well to analyse it but it has grown on me. Wasn’t too fond of it at first but listening at the right time of year with the right vibe, it’s like a fine wine that gets better with age. (more…)

  • New Year’s Resolutions 2011

Sparkling 2011 It’s the time of year again where we all try to make plans for the upcoming year and promise ourselves that we won’t eat chocolate, we’ll go to the gym and other things that we have to physically exert ourselves for.

    So here’s mine:

I want to read more. I’m going to try to read a book a week, starting with The Great Gatsby. I’ll review the book then.

By the end of January I want to have this blog moved to nessymon.com, have all the Culture Cafe podcasts edited and online and my new ‘Nessycast’ up and running.

I want to up-skill a bit and get better with 3D animation and with Javascript and php and actually understand it all.

I would like to spend some more time in France and get some driving lessons.. thinking about it, that’s probably enough to keep me busy 🙂

Oh I’ve also made a pact with Daire O’Reilly that I, yes me, will record an album before November 2012.. so i better get cracking on that.. :S
