  • Then 1956: CD Review

Then 1956When this CD landed in my inbox my initial reaction was ‘ooh a compilation from 1956, the year that changed music forever’. But I was also a bit cautious, prior knowledge of some compilations of oldies have left me cold with bad quality versions of the hits of the day.

Compiled by Dave McAleer, who is an expert in music of the 50’s and 60’s, Then 1956 also looks at the events of the year which are documented in the sleeve notes. The song choices are great, featuring some the better known tracks of the year from Elvis Presley, Dean Martin and of course, Bill Haley & The Comets to lesser known tracks like Teresa Brewers’ ‘A Sweet Old Fashioned Girl’.

What was most important for me though was pressing play and hearing these songs in great quality. The tracks are not dull and don’t sound like they were recorded in the bottom of a well. Score!

Whether a music lover or a newbie to the era, Then 1956 is a really introduction not only to the music of the year but its also really interesting to listen to these tracks and see how music has changed.

As for the title of the series ‘Then 1956′ instead of the ‘Now‘ series, pure genius.

  • Nick Howard: Falling For You

nick howardNick Howard is a British Songwriter who moved to the States to take over the music world. On hearing his music it’s easy to see why he made the move, having quite a AOR sound, not unlike Five For Fighting or Shawn Mullins perhaps.  Me likes a lot.

Anyway, along the way Howard managed to make his way onto the soundtracks for The Hills, Jersey Shore and what impressed me most, LA Ink! Not bad exposure if you can get it.

His single ‘A Better Man’ broke into the US radio charts in 2009 and is available for free download from his website.

‘Falling for you’ is released in Ireland on November 26th.

  • Hogan: Five Years On Review

five years on hoganHogan have been around for a few years now and have just released the album ‘Boom’ from which the single ‘Five Years On’ is taken.

The single is an driving rock track that you can dance to and was produced by Greg Havers (Manics, The Lost Prophets, Melanie C).

It is a grower and after a couple of listens the track does draw you in more. The first vocal line kind threw me off a bit with what seems to be a faux accent, perhaps trying bring the band into the Pop/punk market. Luckily this doesn’t arise later in the track.

There’s some good musicianship and great drumming, going on this once Hogan find where their musical home is, they’ll be sorted. Should hear more of this around.

  • Tron Legacy: Preview Review

On Thursday morning I was one of the lucky one to see 23 minute preview of Tron Legacy which is due for theatre release in December.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Tron Legacy is the sequel to the 1982 movie Tron. The 23 minutes of what I saw contained a selection of scenes from the first half of the movie, which gave a rough idea of the script. We were told by the Walt Disney rep that it wasn’t the final audio mix and that Daft Punk were supplying the soundtrack.

Visually, Tron Legacy looks stunning. The 3D technology makes what I saw completely amazing. The colours are so vivid and electrifying. It’s only a matter of time before there is a game based on all this and perhaps something featuring the suits worn by the characters. Extremely visually striking. The trailers currently on the net don’t come close to being able to compliment the movie.

Can’t wait to see the full thing.
