  • Babybeef Album Review

    babybeef

Babybeef is the solo electronic project by Sarah Carroll Kelly, a Dublin based multi instrumentalist and performance artist.

Starting with the current single ‘Music’ it sets the tone for the rest of the album. This is an 80’s tinged electro pop song with a big bass sound and clever hooks.

Throughout the album, you can pin point certain influences and sounds from the 80s. A Bronski Beat style refrain, A-ha and Jermaine Stewart style rhythm, this doesn’t take away from the album but adds to make them more accessible to the new listener. Add a dash of Daft Punk and you’re laughing.

Carroll Kelly does a good job with this debut of showing us what she has to offer. Stand out tracks have to be ‘I’m OK’, an understated track with nice vocal background harmonies, ‘Wait’, a midtempo track which showcases Carroll Kelly’s vocals.

One track that must be mentioned on this album is the Babybeef cover of ‘Thunderstruck’, inspired choice. Thick synth bass sounds galore. I reckon this is what Kate Bush would sound like if she was into electro.

Great introduction to Babybeef , A slightly wider pop mix on these tracks might make it more appealing to the masses but definitely a great start.

Babybeef is released through After the Quake Records

  • National Campaign for the Arts: Day of Action

    Got this today, Do it!ncfta

All over the country today artists and arts organisations are participating in a National Day of Action to protect funding for the arts. We are meeting TDs and celebrating what we do with special events.

Our message is simple. The arts are a necessity. Not a luxury. The arts are an asset. Not an overhead. The arts enhance our reputation, generate growth, drive tourism and enrich us as citizens.

If you’ve ever enjoyed a film, a play, a gig or an exhibition, please support the National Campaign for the Arts. While we accept that money is sparse and sacrifices are being made across society, there is a real danger that further cuts will obliterate one of Ireland’s strengths – its culture. On a basic economic level, further cuts make no sense – the arts generate more for the economy than they cost to fund. All you have to do is visit www.ncfa.ie There you will see ‘Email your TDs’ Just click on it, choose your constituency, sign it and it will automatically email all the TDs in your area on your behalf. It takes about 1 min – tops!

We know you understand this. Please add your voice to our campaign.

    Thank you for your support.

  • Giants : Best in West

    1STPLACE-nl

    Giants Ist place

Anyone who knows me knows I’m a Giants fan, they also know you’ll probably find me awake at 5am watching the end of home games. This morning I woke up at 05.12 to see a fantastic score: Dodgers 2 Giants 9.. then it went Dodgers 2 Giants 10.

It’s September, San Francisco Giants are in first place in the NL West. First place isn’t something that has been associated with the Giants in recent years. But it feels good! Fingers crossed for playoffs but no matter what happens you’ve made this a September to remember.

Poor Old Georgie Boy // George Michael

British singer George Michael arrives at court

George Michael has been a musical hero of mine since I was about 10/11, basically his entire career. Instead of studying for my Inter certificate in school I was able to recite all of George’s Faith album.

‘Wham Rap, Careless George Loses his Freedom’, the cleverest non corny headline from yesterdays Times. George got jail and seemingly isn’t coping with it too well. Musically George can do no wrong as far as I’m concerned but driving with drugs or alcohol in your system isn’t on.

If he wants to sit at home and get stoned out of his head, well, that’s his business but once he attempted to drive, not only did he put himself in danger, he also and more importantly, put members of the public in danger. As it wasn’t his first offence he deserved to be punished. In a way, George’s incarceration shows other high profile figures that it doesn’t matter who you are, the justice system is the justice system and won’t be changed for you.

For me, I hope that this give George the opportunity and the realisation to do something serious to get over his drug addictions. His talent is too much to waste. He’ll always be God to me.. Here’s hoping that his stint inside will give him a kick to make music like this again. (more…)
