  • Mick Lally RIP

Ireland lost one of its greatest actors of television and theatre. Mick Lally, was probably best known for his role as Miley in Glenroe. His catchphrase ‘Well Holy God’ is still uttered by many round these parts.

When living in Rathmines, I’d often see Mick cycling his bike. I’d never think there’s Mick Lally, it was always ‘There’s Miley’. Mick also had some chart success with ‘The Byroad to Glenroe’ which was recorded for the tv show.

    Rest in peace.

  • Pavesi EP Review

pavesiTaking their name from the old ballroom where they practised, Pavesi are a four piece from Donegal. They’ve just released a three track EP.

The EP opens with ‘East Side’ a melodic mid tempo track. There’s nothing wrong with the track, it all just seems a tad safe and a bit formulaic. The chorus has a nice little hook, it just needs more of a build up into it to differentiate itself from the verse. There are also two instrumental breaks, in a four minute song it seems a bit overkill and slightly drains the energy from the song. The last minute of the song is entirely instrumental. Cut that off, you’ve a better chance of radio play.

From the opening notes of ‘Shake’ I’m asking if this is the same band, there seems to be more energy to the song. The drum/guitar into works well and is a lot more contemporary than the previous track but somehow falls back into a safe mode.

Listening to the two tracks, it seems that the band may have over produced themselves. While the tracks are mid-tempo, and well thought out, again there’s not enough definition in the production and mix for this writer.

Turnaround Year is the best track on the EP, perhaps the band used a different producer. There are more highs and lows to Turnaround Year, the instruments are better mixed together. Much better all round.

The first two tracks just are too safe and there’s nothing we haven’t heard from other bands here. Turnaround Year seems to be from a different collection altogether. More of that one please.

  • Jane Lynch’s Emmy Speech

So Jane Lynch won Best Actress in a Comedy Role for her fantastic portrayal of Sue Sylvester in Glee. The Emmys have always seemed as a more fun night than the Oscars, win or lose everyone seems to be out for a good time.

Bow down and worship.. Fantastically honest speech!

  • Time Please Gentlemen

    clock

Or it could be ladies either.

This is something that has been bugging me slightly for a while. Why oh why do bands play on so late in certain venues.

Last buses in Dublin are at 2330, though some leave the city centre slightly earlier. At the weekend, you’ve got the infamous nightlink (bus) if you fancy having a dance with danger.

For me, from the city centre, its either €1.60 or €1.80 home, which is fine. The nightlink is either €4 or €5. I’m not sure. Why do I not know? There isn’t a nightlink route near where I live. So if I miss the last bus it can cost anything between €15 – €20 to get a taxi home, depending on the part of the city I’m in.

Most venues and bands have copped on that people need to get home. However there is one venue that every time I go there, I end up having to leave before the band finishes their set. One venue, why? Everyone else can do it.

Any band who open the doors to the event at 19.30 and don’t arrive onstage until after 22.15 need to rethink how they are running their nights. Whether it’s being better prepared themselves, beforehand or choosing their opening act more carefully.

I know I’m not the only one this effects. Recently I bumped into some people at a gig in Dublin city centre. I left at 23.05 to get the last bus home. To my surprise, I also met these people on the last bus home, they too had the same reason.

This is the end of the rant. Bands and Venues, If people are paying into an event, please let them see all of what they have paid good money for.
