  • Want to hear your music on DCUfm?

As Assistant Manager of DCUfm, I’m trying to get my act in order A.S.A.P. Hopefully we’ll be back on air in less than a month so at the moment we’re just going through some stuff.

But, this is your chance to get your music playlisted on Ireland’s best college radio station. We don’t mind if you’re unsigned, we don’t mind if you’re from Ireland or from further across our little blue planet, what we want is GREAT music.

We’re looking for all genres and styles of music, we can help you get exposure to a great student audience and you can help us be the best cutting edge station we can be.

So if you’re up for it, please send any music and a short biography to nessyontheradio@gmail.com

  • Reel News

I found this on a DVD at home. I made this as part of a two week studio session in Ballyfermot College of Further Education in 2007 when I started a TV course. I deffered my place on the course and then went to do the degree in DCU. The two weeks in studio were great, we got to do every studio position at least one. It was great, barrel of laughs.. once we figured out what we had to do.You can read all about the two weeks here.

I edited a couple of music videos out of this so Youtube wouldn’t take it down. Enjoy!

  • Des Bishop at The Twisted Pepper

On Saturday night last I had the pleasure of attending a warm up show for Des Bishop‘s appearance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The gig took place upstairs in The Twisted Pepper in Abbey St, Dublin, a nice little room, cosy, and intimate for an audience of about 50 people. As it was Saturday night too, everyone was ready for a laugh.

I’m not going to gove away any of Des’ jokes from his show, ‘My Dad was nearly James Bond’, that wouldn’t be fair. What I will say is that Des takes the topic of cancer and somehow manages to make us laugh, despite the subject matter.

The show is funny, nostalgic and what I loved about the warmup was, occasionally Des let his onstage guard down to show a softer human side, something we often forget about these funnyguys.

Des gave away tickets for the event on Twitter (where I got them) and on Facebook. A great way to get ready for Edinburgh and in these broke times, a free night out. Tickets for a full Irish tour are on sale now.. go see it.

Thanks Des, best of luck in Edinburgh.

  • The Saw Doctors: Takin’ The Train EP Review

    saw doctors takin the train
I’ve never been the biggest fan of The Saw Doctors, they always seemed a little too Irish for me. Saying that though, it’s twenty years since the mighty ‘I Useta Love her’ and they’re still going strong.

Taken from the album ‘The Saw Doctors…Further Adventures’, the ‘Takin’ The Train’ EP is a great reintroduction to the band. Lead single, ‘Takin’ The Train’ is a midtempo folk rock track and once the unmistakeable vocals of Davy Carton kick in, you know it’s The Saw Doctors. The band have always seemed to base their tracks on stories of Irish life. This is no different, as the song tells of the confines of living and loving in a small town.

It’s a melodic track with a muted lead guitar sound. They have definitely updated their distinct ‘Saw Doctors’ sound with clever production and a musical break and ‘oh oh’ refrain makes the track sound huge. You’ll hear loads of it on the radio.

The slower tempo-ed, ‘Be Yourself’ is bound to be a great singalong track while the ‘Hazard’ is an upbeat rock track. Although the band could be classed as a folk rock band there are moments throughout the EP where they veer into a more mainstream indie.

‘Last Call’ starts with a drum and piano intro and features thoughtful lyrics and tender vocals. The addition of Eímhín Craddock on drums seems to have given the band a new lease of life. Craddock has three co-writes on the EP and maybe its this new blood that seems to make The Saw Doctors still relevant on the Irish music scene. Either way we’ll be hearing a lot more of them going on these tracks.
