  • When You’re Strange: Film Review

    When You're Strange

It’s nearly 40 years since Jim Morrison died and its twenty years since the remaining members disapproved of Val Kilmer’s portrayal of The Lizard King in Oliver Stone’s biopic, ‘The Doors’. There have been dozens of books and hundreds of accounts of the life and times of Jim Morrison and The Doors. Can a new film actually add to that?

‘When You’re Strange‘ is directed by Tom DiCillo and is compiled from archive footage along with HWY: An American Pastoral, Jim Morrison’s 1969’s 50 minute experimental film. Narration is provided by Johnny Depp.

The film traces the life of The Doors from getting together through to Morrison’s death. Using archived material, DiCillo has pieced together an almost documentary style of film. The Doors are shown recording their first album to Morrison’s infamous on stage arrests in New Haven, Connecticut and Miami, Florida. It also shows us the vulnerable poet side of Morrison.

The film doesn’t sugar-coat the troubles of the band and is a great starting point for anyone wanting to find out about The Doors. It shows why The Doors were relevant at the time but also the what the USA was like with its youth culture of the late sixties. It’s an interesting story that has been told well, it’s just we’ve heard it before.

  • Online Culture Meet & Greet

    Online culture Meet & Greet

Thanks to being mental busy this week, I’m only getting a chance to write about this now.

On Wednesday July 21st I attended an Online Meet & Greet, organised by Temple Bar Cultural Trust. The Summer Sensation that they organised was blogged, tweeted, written about in all forms and involved a competition. As giving Dave from DublinCulture.ie a prize for his efforts, it was great to hear from new people and businesses in the Temple Bar area and how they are incorporating and learning to incorporate social media into their daily work. There were people from new galleries and bookshops in the area there. It’s really a great way to get the word out about events, people blog and tweet and others talk about it!

Really enjoyed it, it was great meeting up with Aidan and Deirdre from Goldenplec and Nicole Rourke from The Big Smoke Writing Factory who I know from Brownies and the beloved Eureka Secondary School in Kells. Haven’t seen Nicole in years! Also great to finally meet Steph, who I had known through twitter.

Very Special thanks to Julie from Temple Bar and Darragh Doyle for organising the whole evening, looking forward to the next one!

  • Prince: 20Ten Review

How do you really write about a new Prince album? The Artist Formerly known as Squiggle has for the second time licensed a new album for distribution in a UK tabloid. 3 Million copies of 2007’s Planet Earth was given away with a Sunday newspaper for free but shortly after that Prince sold out the 02 in London for an incredible 21 nights, generating £11 million sterling.

Like the strange person he is, he has also recently said the internet is dead.. yeah ok. Prince Rogers Nelson, you may be nutty enough to say that or not allow your music on Youtube but you’re still clever enough to play the game. So what’s the music like?

Pretty damn good actually. 20Ten kicks off with ‘Compassion’, an upbeat track sounding like it came out of 1984. We’re talking Prince circa Let’s Go Crazy. ‘Beginning Endlessly’ is so familiar, its Prince with his signature harmonies, synth sounds and funky guitar sounds. This is basically Squiggle getting down and dirty at the ripe ole age of 52.
