  • Derek Nally RIP

    Derek Nally RIP

It was with shock and sadness last night that I learned off the passing of Derek Nally, music promoter, band manager and music entrepreneur.

Derek was responsible for bookings and promotions in legendary venue, Whelans and was also band manager of Juliet Turner and Kells band Ham Sandwich.

I first met Derek when I was working in Trend Studios, I was making production masters for Juliet’s cracking album Burn the Black Suit. I got to know Derek a bit better after Trend and we had several coffees and chats. Listening to Derek’s music knowledge and expertise was amazing. He had such a passion for music and was so helpful to so many bands.

I last met Derek two weeks ago, he was sitting beside us at Elvis Costello’s gig. My condolences to Derek’s wife and children.

    We’ve lost a great.

  • Robbie’s Back with Take That?

    sky news announce robbies back

About Bloody time!  Since the first Take That reunion tour it’s become almost a joke with the will he, wont he? But according to Sky News he will!!

I’ve seen Take That twice, seen Robbie Williams three times, never together though!

I will admit I’ve always been a bit of a Take That fan and have Could It Be Magic on 7″ and I also have the Babe cd Single with limited calendar cover for 1994. (showing my age here)

When Take That announced the final goodbye in 1996 after Robbie had left the group, he seemed like Robbie had made a good decision.  Gary Barlow had two hits with Forever Love and Open Road but seemed to drift off to the ‘dumper’ (used especially for Smash Hits readers). Robbie on the other hand released a cover of George Michael‘s Freedom before heading to record ‘Life Thru a Lens’.

  • DCU Presidential Inauguration

    DCU Presidential Inauguration
Yesterday I had the honour of attending the Inauguration of DCU’s third President, Brian MacCraith. Held in the Helix, it was quite ritualistic at times but for those involved in the actual ceremony itself, it seemed quite emotional.

Professor MacCraith takes over from Professor Ferdinand Von Prondzynski after his ten year tenure as DCU’s President.

Proceedings kicked off a procession of DCU’s academic’s in their full flowing robes accompanied by some music composed by Shaun Davey, with a solo by Liam O’Flynn, which we were then told was commissioned to be DCU’s new anthem. MC for the day was Deputy President, Professor P Anne Scott.

Students from different ethnic backgrounds joined with the University Chaplins for prayer. There were touching words by Professor Von Prondzynski about his last ten years in DCU and also celebrating his silver wedding anniversary. Until yesterday, I didn’t even know DCU had a choir, they did stirring rendition of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.

Various people from within the university welcomed Professor MacCraith to his new post. He’s no stranger to DCU and has been working there previously.

The installation of the new Presidential comes in two parts really, firstly the outgoing President removes the Presidential robes and returns to wearing the robes colour coded for his discipline. Then the Chancellor of the University, helps robe the Incoming President with the black and gold Presidential robes. The second part is where new President signs the role of DCU University Presidents.

Professor MacCraith inaugural speech looked at how DCU must move forward and, what I was really impressed with,  from next academic year, one Nobel laureate will visit DCU and give a public speech in the Helix. This will become an annual event.

Really nice event, I’m glad I was there. Yes, all the robes did remind me of Hogwarts, except yesterday was full of colourful robes and there wasn’t a broomstick in sight. (more…)
