  • Jersey Shore: Are they really like that?

I’ve been hearing about MTV’s new show Jersey Shore for a couple of weeks. It seems to be causing quite a stir. I was listening to a tech podcast last week when the subject of Jersey Shore arose, one podcaster described it as ‘ where young Italian American’s go to express their sexuality’. OK then!

Seeing as it was a bank holiday weekend and tendonitis in my shoulder kept me quiet, I decided as I was flicking through the Channels, that I’d have a go and see what it was all about. Besides, The Late Late Show was on on again and I just could take another two hours of Tubridy.

First impressions as the housemates arrive are that its like The Real World.. ok no biggie there.. All the cast have arrived and they get to know each other. One of the housemates, Snookie, a tiny little person obviously cant drive as much as the others and is pretty soon is in a heap. Fun and games start.. in the hot tub! Poor Snookie tries gets to know a couple of the guys rather well.

  • Toy Soldier: Wild One Single Review

    toy soldier cover

Toy Soldier is a two piece electronic act from Cork and the brainchild of Cian Walsh. Walsh has been on the indie scene in a number of different guises over the past few years. Toy Soldier sees him team up with Fergal McCarthy. The result is a fresh, on the pulse sound, that could lead to bigger things.

‘Wild One’ is an uptempo track  with a slight electronic tip of the hat to Owl City. Where Toy Soldier differs is that their sound isn’t soaked in saccharine.  Wild One has a pumping bassline and a chorus that hits at 35 seconds in. This could easily go side by side with any current Top 40 opponent. Catchy hooks, delicate vocal harmonies and is that  (shock horror) a guitar I hear. Brilliant!

Track 2 is ‘Battles’. For some reason the vocal melody reminds this listener of ‘Wonderful Life’ by Black from  the late 80’s. And that’s not a bad thing. ‘Battles’ isn’t as in your face as ‘Wild One’. Production is excellent with little sounds and noises you won’t even realise are there without a set of headphones on.

Somebody please.. make these guys stars! Excellent stuff! Mr Record Company Man, if you’ve any money left, give some to Toy Soldier.

  • RIP Charles Townsend

    John-Forsythe
    John Forsythe RIP

Yesterday sawing the passing of John Forsythe, at the age of 92. He had a long career and according to most news sources was best known as Blake Carrington from Dynasty.

Not for me though, to me, He was and always will be ‘Charlie’.

Even though I was about 6 or 7 at the most, I was obsessed. I had to be in bed at 8. Full Stop. There was one night each week, a Tuesday, when I could stay up til 9. I waited for the words and then nothing could move me for an hour.

“Once upon a time, three little girls went to the police academy, two in Los Angeles and the other in San Francisco. They were each assigned very hazardous duties. But I took them away from all that, and now they work for me. My name is Charlie.”

I watched every episode of Charlie’s Angels but I did prefer them once Cheryl Ladd joined the fold as Jill Munroe’s (Farrah Fawcett-Majors) little sister Kris.

  • Von Bizmark: Address The Silence

von bizmark - address the silence cover

Dublin based Kilkenny band, Von Bizmark release ‘Address The Silence’ on April 9th. It’s the follow up to “London’ and sees the band in flying form.

After the release of ‘London’ the band toured in the UK as well as a string of dates in Ireland. This seems to have worked a trick as Von Bizmark now seem like a confident rock band, comfortable in their own skins.

‘Address the Silence’ is an uptempo rock track with some great vocals from Tony Hoyne. Good song structure, production is great, little guitar hooks reel you in without even noticing it. If this was only recorded in January this year, I’d love to see what’s following.. Should be great.
