  • Chinese New Year – Dublin

    big wheel
So I’ve been overtaken by some horrible bug, I left the house on Sunday for a few hours and went into town to check out the Chinese New Year celebrations.

It was a quite modest affair in Wolfe Tone Park near Jervis St, with some music and stalls and a dragon. It was great but I would have loved to have seen a hell of a lot more.

There was a Chinese pop singer and a troop doing a routine with a dragon. Parents and kids seemed to be everywhere buying balloons of Hello Kitty. I would have like d to have seen more traditional Chinese things happening. I know Chinese people buy toy fish because in their language it sounds like lucky or wealth. More of these things on display would have been great.

  • Storyfold: Delphine Wakes Review

StoryfoldI originally wrote this for MusicReviewUnsigned. Run Kid changed their name to Storyfold and ‘Delphine Wakes’ is their debut single out soon.

Formed in March 2009, Dublin based Storyfold should be still cutting their teeth but this two track promo makes them sound like seasoned pros on top of their game.

Track 1, Delphine is an uptempo pop punk track, nice harmonies, great piano lines and a chorus that makes you want to dance. The vocals from Paddy McKenna are slightly reminiscent of Ryan from Yellowcard to this listener, which is in no way a bad thing. Production on this track is top notch.

Behind Closed Doors is track 2 a slower tempo track with a great build up to the chorus. These guys are going to be a force to be reckoned with. The string arrangement is so subtle, its masterful.

Run Kid have defined their own sound, even in these two tracks, powerpop/punk with a distinctive piano and vocal combination. Going on these two tracks they should have a long career ahead of them.

  • Von Shakes: The Routine review

vonshakes I wrote this for MusicReviewUnsigned.

The debut single from Dublin quartet Von Shakes, kicks in with an uptempo rock beat. ‘The Routine’ shows a band that have grown in stature since their debut EP ‘Mind Your Head’ and if they keep going in the direction they are, could grow to be a force to be reckoned with.

Going by the credits, Paul Byrne, Conor Brady and Phil Hayes, they have a good backroom team behind them, it shows on ‘The Routine’. It’s tight well produced and has a dead stop ending that radio presenters love.

‘The Routine’ has driving rhythm, memorable hooks and a catchy chorus. Looking forward to hearing more.
