  • Why is Morse Code Dead?

    seaman_send_morse_code_signals

As a complete techie/gadget freek, the recent snow and closure of the city of Dublin got me thinking… if snow can cause this much hassle for everyone, what would happen if the electricity and communications grid was shut down.

It would probably be somewhere between post 9/11 New York and the Day after tomorrow. Imagine, no phones, computers, lights, heat, my god no telly! what would we do? How would we communicate?

Why do we not use Morse Code anymore? I do know were not all going to be at sea and caught having to use Morse code as an SOS light signal but really why? It was used until 1999 and was the official maritime communication system. After that the Global Distress Safety System was introduced.

There could be a time when we don’t have the facilities or capabilities to use electronic communication systems, so Morse Code should and would be really the only reliable way of transmitting messages.

  • Social Media to the Rescue

    facebook

Last night myself and a college buddy were chatting outside our beloved school of intellectual enlightenment. It was getting late and we said our farewells.

I turned towards the pedestrian lights to cross the road and spotted a wallet on the ground in front of me. I looked around to see if the owner was near but there was no one around. I checked inside, saw a name, bank cards and some cash. Why do we never put our own number in our wallet?

I saw the owner was a student but not in our college.. I’d just have to left a message at their college reception for them.

I got home, had another look to see if there was an address or a number and decided to tweet if anyone knew the person. I then went to Facebook and did a search for the person.

I found both them and their boyfriend, sent a message and got a reply a couple of hours later. I had also got two replies from Twitter, with contact details for the person.

The wallet was returned to the owner 14 hours after I found the wallet.

    Yay for social media!

  • Open Day at the IFI

    IFI

The Irish Film Institute in Eustace Street in Dublin has done some renovations and is now reopened for business.

I’ve been going to the IFI for over a decade and consider a must do/must be a member for anyone living in Dublin.  Membership is cheap as chips and if you’re a member, every month there is a chance to see a film for free. You also get the monthly brochure delivered to your door.

I’ve seen some great films there including the Norwegian film O Horten, Me and Orson Welles and have also been to some great talks and Q & A sessions with the likes of French FIlmaker Nicholas Philibert (the man is a legend) and Elizabeth: The Golden Age Director, Shekhar Kapur.
