  • Mark Romanek At Darklight, Dublin

    mark romanek

I have to say I really enjoyed Mark Romanek’s chat yesterday in The Guinness Storehouse, as part of the Darklight Film Festival.

The event was facilitated by Eoghan Kidney, who himself is a great video director.

They looked at some of  Mr Romanek’s work, firstly, Johnny Cash’s ‘Hurt’ which is a classic. The frailty of Cash and the story behind the video footage being edited in is amazing.

The Johnny Cash museum was a couple of miles from Johnny Cash’s house where the video was recorded and had been closed for 15 years. The crew visited the museum and saw a library full of film footage of Mr Cash’s career, which were promptly sent to the editing suite.

I love the Nine Inch Nails video ‘Closer’, Mark explained about the film stock that was used and the story of the little monkey seemingly tied to a crucifix. The little beggar was quite happy eating bananas while shooting was taking place. The grimmace on his face is on ethat all his breed have.

Two people got their work critiqued by the master and a couple of things stood out. Mr Romanek was so honest. He didn’t tell anyone they were crap or their work was bad but he offered advice on how he thought the pieces could be improved to engage the viewer more, to show more narrative, get more warmth into a piece.

It was an enjoyable day and a delight to hear someone in Mr Romanek’s position  be so honest.

I also met  and old buddy of mine, James Cadden, of Voicebox Productions. We always seem to meet at these types of events. It was great to see James.

The Guinnes Storehouse where the event was held is an amazing building.  Its interweaving escalators remind me of Charles de Gaule airport.

  • Stephen Gately RIP

Stephen RIPIt 530 am, I’ve just done my usual wake up, check what game is on ESPN and have a look at twitter.

Within five seconds of twittering, it became apparent that gut wrenchingly and shockingly true that Stephen Gately has passed away in his sleep.

Stephen was one of five guys who became Ireland’s first proper pop stars in the modern era. The Boyzone singer grew up in public, being the youngest in the group and probably paved the way for members of others boybands to let their sexuality be known.

Stephen’s career took a slightly different road when Boyzone split up, when he became a West End star before the band reformed in 2008.

Stephen married his partner, Andrew, in 2006 in the UK.

According to sources Stephen died in his sleep while on holiday. He was 33.

My condolences to Andrew, Stephen’s family and friends.

  • Speech Debelle Live Review 3/10/09

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect going to see Speech Debelle.

It could go two ways. The gig on Saturday October 3rd was being held in Academy 2 so it could be that even though she had won the Mercury Music Prize she wasn’t very good. Option 2 The world hasn’t copped on to her immense talent yet. I’m delighted to say it was the latter.

Upon entering the cavernous venue that is Academy 2, the small crowd seems just to be out for a regular Saturday night at a local pub.

Heck I got tickets for the gig two weeks after Speech won the Mercury Prize!

The Infomatics take to the stage, (I used to work in the same music venue as their bass player Graham, many moons ago) and I’m impressed.

This five piece recently won RTE’s Raw Sessions and its not hard to see why. Their brand of funky hiphop is captivating and refreshing. The twin Mcs really work well together, even if one of them cutely leaves his backpack on for the entire set.

Graham gave me a CD, I’ll do a review.

By the time Speech Debelle hits the stage the venue has filled up and the anticipation is building.

Debelle comes onstage to a muted response and begins her set with her debut single ‘The Key’. It’s not long before the rapper has the crowd in the palm of her hand, winning them over with an organic jazzy triphop sound and a wicked sense of humour.

Debelle tells us tales of the man who drank a pint of Guinness the whole way down leaving the head intact ‘Magic innit?’ She happily asks someone to mind her stage ‘please lady’ before posing for photographs for this person. She also mentions that she won the Mercury Music Prize and that the NME guys don’t like it. She hastens to add ‘her boys don’t wear no skinny jeans’.

Her trio backing band, double bass, acoustic guitar and drums, is all she needs. The organic funkyjazz base sit beautifully with her vocal rhymes.

Afterwards she quite happily posed for photos.. I wanted to chat but crutches are still a bit dehabilating. Wonder if she’ll come on DCUFM?

The gig leaves me with a couple of questions. Has the music industry killed itself? Speech Debelle is currently playing every nook and cranny to ‘make it’. But according to anyone who was at The Academy, she already has!
