The London Ear on RTÉ 2XM // Show 226 with Laura Mulcahy

So something a bit horrible happened meaning that this week’s show wasn’t actually broadcast on DAB or online, something else was broadcast instead.

While this was beyond my control, it doesn’t hide that it is deeply frustrating and annoying. Not only for me but also for Laura Mulcahy who gave her time to chat to me to about her new single ‘Once Upon a Time in The Sand Dunes’.

To Laura, I can only apologise.

I really enjoyed chatting to Laura about her music, she has, what I can only describe as an intense loyalty to her art. Her art is everything.

You can find out more about Laura on her website, Facebook and Twitter.

Nessy Recommends // Lexxa – Get Out

‘Get Out’ is right up my street. Maude and Julia Morris produce music as Lexxa. They also happen to be twins which thanks to biology, makes for lovely harmonies.

‘Get Out’ has an eighties vibe that I adore. Those special little ‘pow pow’ percussive sounds, heavenly synths and guitar sounds are what my ears were made for.  The track builds and dips coming back to a huge choral refrain, which is a bit of an earworm. I’m not sure if these ladies have heard Shura’s music but theirs can slide right in alongside it in your record collection. It’s an absolute cracker.

‘Get Out’ is their second single and the follow up to ‘i got better friends now’ and the video was shot by Connor Pritchard.

Lexxa have been building a reputation in New Zealand and have been honing their craft including opening up for well known New Zealand and international touring acts as well as some shows in Australia. They’ve also been involved in a series of gigs run in at the Listen Showcase in Melbourne in June 2018.

LISTEN is a group who who promote the visibility and experiences of women, gender non-conforming and LGBTQIA+ people through live music showcase events.  Excellent work!

You can find out more about Maude and Julia on Facebook, Insta and Twitter. Get out is available through Tone Tonic.

It was great to finally catch up with Julie Hough, from Havvk on The London Ear. Havvk are now a Berlin based band but started life in London, although the band are originally from Ireland.

We had a number of things to chat about on the show, the band’s new single ‘Always The Same’, their album announcement which will be called ‘Cause and Effect’ and will be released in two parts in 2019.

We also had a chance to chat about how Havvk have set up Veta Records and are working with other artists including the excellent Maria Kelly and Dyver.

Julie is also the cofounder of Self Made, a platform to explore DIY music through performance, discussion, and art, with a strong focus on women in music.   They are running a number of events. Do keep an eye out, the support a group like this can provide is simply amazing. You can read their mission statement in full here.
