Tune of the Week // Hayes and Y – Always So Simple, Always So Cold

Hayes and Y are an interesting bunch. With members coming from mainland Europe and as far away as Finland and Bulgaria, they moved to the UK and now call Manchester home.

Although the band have three EPs previously released, the current release ‘Always So Simple, Always So Cold’ is more than enough to make me want to explore their back catalogue. I have to admit, I have a serious soft spot for 80s synth sounds. Along with a big fat bass line, gorgeous guitar riffs and vocals that are perfectly delivered, this is a ‘stick your headphones on and turn the volume up loud’ kinda song. Don’t be surprised if this ends up on a TV or movie soundtrack.

The London Ear // Show 169 with The Ungraceful Guide

Today on The London Ear, I was delighted to discover that Latin America, Peru, to be precise, has decent, wifi. That meant I was able to catch up with Dubliners, Katie Hogan and Luke Gibney, who run The Ungraceful Guide. The Ungraceful Guide a blog, which is documenting their travels.

At the time of recording, the pair were in Peru, right now, they’re in Bolivia and continuing their travels in Latin America. Up next, if all goes well, is Asia.

The pair are travelling on a budget, if you’re Asia, get in touch with them. Have them stay in your hostel, eat in your restaurant and let them write about you on The Ungraceful Guide. I’m sure they’d be delighted to hear from you.

The London Ear on RTE 2XM // Show 168 with Gregory Nolan

On this week’s show, I chat to Irish photographer, Gregory Nolan, whose exhibition ‘This was our scene’ is happening in the Fumbally Exchange in Dublin from October 19.

Hold on here a cotton picking minute, I hear you say, this show is about Irish people outside Ireland, no? In saying that, you are in fact correct. Gregory shot all the images for his exhibit in the mid noughties in London’s indie music scene.

Gregory is based between Europe and the U.S. and has worked with the likes of Bastille and Frank Turner. This collection of photographs gives a great insight into that London scene, not only the bands but also the punters!

    Playlist // Quench Your Thirst

Recently, Limerick’s Rusangano Family released a single ‘Tea in a Pot’. Anyone that knows me, knows I’m pretty serious about my tea. Although the aforementioned song mentions Barry’s, I’m a lifelong Lyons tea drinker. Seeing as they’re not available in the UK, I’ve become a master at the art of importing the very best Lyons Gold Blend. For personal consumption, I might add.

Just as I was wondering what theme I would base a new Spotify playlist around, I had an answer. Beverages. So sit down, grab a a big mug / glass / drinking receptacle with your fave and Quench Your Thirst.
