What Would You Put In Your Bag? Reflections on Ukraine

I’m a walking sack of contradictions. I love a good disaster movie. An asteroid about to hit the earth? Sign me up. The aliens are landing just as the zombies have risen? Five star ratings from me. Dystopian and war novels are just my thing. Children of Men, yup, extra-large popcorn for me.

In real life, I hate confrontation and I can’t understand why people can’t just live and let live. I also hate real war and hate what’s going on in Ukraine and what Putin is doing. I just can’t comprehend the mindset of someone who thinks it’s ok to put so much pain and suffering on another.

Looking at the news over the past few days has been heartbreaking. The pictures of people leaving their homes with one bag was the topic of conversation for myself and Talulah. What would you bring? What could you not leave behind?

Thinking about it, you would need travel documents, birth certificates, proof of name and address, a few photos, medication, spare socks, that kind of thing. But it’s not really about what is in the bag. It’s about what’s left behind.

We all struggle and strive to have a nice place to live, to have appliances, gadgets and facilities that make our lives ‘easier’. More and more of these are just for fun, for passing the time, for entertainment. We try to have nice clothes, we buy stuff so we can, hopefully, make a ‘better’ future for ourselves. But these are just material things.

The pictures from Ukraine are a stark reminder that we need to cherish and savour every moment of every day. Everything we have could be taken away from us in an instant. As a society, we really should have learned this from the pandemic. Live every day like it’s your last.

    Heroes of Ukraine

One of my favourite books is The Paris Architect by Charles Belfoure. An architect living in Paris during WWII tries to hide and protect Jewish people from the house searches of the Gestapo. This, and all the dystopian films I’ve watched and books I’ve read, have one common thread. There’s a person, trying to overcome adversity of the highest order. Every fiber of their being is tested. Yes, a hero.

I have the luxury of watching the Russian invasion from afar. I’m safe where I am. Not counting Northern Ireland, this is probably the nearest actual war has been to me in my lifetime. The bravery and sacrifice of the Ukrainian people has overwhelmed me on a few occasions this week. This isn’t a film, it’s real life. A life where the Ukrainian people are fighting back against their invaders, where they are willing to fight and die for the freedom of their families, friends and neighbours. It’s the most unselfish of acts.

Heartbroken families have separated, knowing it may have been their last time together. They filled their bags with what they could carry, what they would need. Women and children leaving their homes to become refugees so they can give their children a future. No doubt, there are mementos in the bags. It’s not about what’s in the bag, it’s about those who have stayed behind so everyone else can have their freedom.

    Interview: Seán Keenan from Nixer

I really enjoyed catching up with Sean from Nixer. Although the band initially were working in Dublin and London, it turns out that both Seán and his bandmate Gearóid, are also now based in South East London, quite close to where I am. I really love the energy that comes from their music and it is truly uplifting to hear an artist so passionate about their music. Nixer have just released a new single ‘Outsider’, from their ‘People Feel’ EP’.

You can find out more about the band on Insta, Facebook and Twitter and head over to Bandcamp to buy some tunes. Get tickets for Nixer’s headline show at The Grace, Islington, on February 24th here.

    SO BIG NEWS TIME!!

From next week, The London Ear will begin at 12 midday and run until 2pm, that’s a massive 100% extra free. I can’t wait to dig in with more interviews in music, arts and culture, still keeping an Irish community feel. This extra time will also give me the opportunity to have a look at the music scene here in London. After all, when we move somewhere we integrate with the world around us, we just don’t keep to our own little bubble.

Can’t wait to kickstart it all next Saturday at 12 midday on RTÉ 2XM.

Over the past while, there have been people ending their subscriptions with major music streaming services for one reason or another. But an Irish-based start-up has just launched a new platform. Minm is still a baby start-up but it’s taking giant leaps. Founders, Luke Lau and Daniel Cosgrove joined me to chat about why they start-up Minm and how a user-centric subscription system means your money is allocated to artists you actually listen to. It’s lovely to see two people so passionate about what they are doing and getting up and doing something to make a change, rather than just complaining like the rest of us.

One other thing, it costs a fiver a month!

If you want to find out more, head over to minm.co and you’ll also find the lads on Twitter.

The London Ear 374 with Wallis Bird

It was an absolute honour to speak to Wallis Bird on this episode of The London Ear. If this is the first you’ve heard of Wallis, here’s a quick intro. Wallis is an Irish Berlin based singer-songwriter who is about to release her seventh studio album. The album will be entitled ‘Hands – Nine and a half songs for nine and a half fingers’. She has just released the first two tracks from the album and I was delighted to chat to her about that.

Wallis encompasses what, for me, it is to be an artist. Hell, if I was a musician, Wallis would be who I would want to be! Cheeky, clever meaningful lyrics, a beautiful delivery and she knows how to funk it up. When the tempo rises, everything else is brought to a higher level.

I really enjoyed speaking to Wallis about the process of how her new album came about. Not only that, I haven’t heard many artists mention the tax payers. What? Yes, when artists were given grants from governments during Covid, these are ultimately coming from the tax payer. It was a refreshing attitude to have, especially when Wallis said that she didn’t want to let those tax payers down. Kudos.

There are so many more nuggets and gems in here, we get to find out about how Wallis, the artist, thinks and I truly appreciate her being so open with me on the program.
