    TheCommitments

    Tuesday June 9 2015 –  *Contains spoilers*

I’ve never read the book but I do remember the first time I saw the film. I saw it in Navan, Co. Meath in the Lyric Cinema on Brewers Hill. At the time, many people could relate to it in Ireland. Unemployment was rife, it was pre-mobile phones, if you didn’t see your mates, you could always meet them down on the dole queue on a Tuesday. Alan Parker’s 1991 film captured it perfectly.

That’s the way Ireland was and The Commitments, combined with a fantastic soundtrack, summed what everyone felt. We all wanted to escape. Fast forward, twenty four years, I live in London and I go to see the stage show in The Palace Theatre.

Director Jamie Lloyd does pack a punch with his production and once the curtain raises, the first reaction is Wow! The ‘Barrytown’ high rise flats aka Ballymun (5 minutes walk from where I lived in D11 in Dublin) is recreated on stage in different levels. Different parts of the flats pull out to reveal the Rabbite household and the local pub are cleverly pushed back to create the square in the centre of all the flats. The Rabbitte household is really well executed with the front room, stairs and Jimmy’s bedroom all on show.

You can’t beat a bit of Dublin humour and The Commitments provides that. It’s impossible to recreate everything from a book or film and at the beginning of the show, it feels a little rushed to get to a certain point in the story by a certain time. But this adds to the comic feel. The laughs are there as well as the ‘Say it once, say it loud, I’m black and I’m proud’ line. I’m always going to compare this to the film, there’s no way around it. It’s a little disappointing that the love triangle / square between Joey the Lips and the three Commitmentettes isn’t drawn out a little more. Unfortunately this leads to Joey not being the smarmy git he is in the 1991 film. The authenticity of Dublin life is kept intact. The stage show remains true to Dubspeak in all it’s fucking glory.

But The Commitments is all about the music and it doesn’t fail to disappoint, although a couple of the big songs from the film are placed at the end of the stage show. If you like your soul music, you’ll be in heaven. It’s loud, it’s in your face and the energy from the stage is just electric. Heaven knows how they managed to do it eight times a week. Denis Grindel excels as the slightly cocky band manager, Jimmy Rabbitte. Brian Gilligan commands the stage with his vocal performance as front man and nutter, Deco. However, it’s a pity The Commitmentettes don’t get more time to shine, they’ve bloody good voices.

Overall it’s a great night’s entertainment, the set is fantastic and I couldn’t help but laugh my bag off at the ‘Heroine Kills’ banner in the community centre, ‘The Hot Press journalist’ and ‘Eejit Records’. These people are speaking in my tongue. It’s Dublin through and through, a little rough round the edges but ye love it to bits.

*Keep an eye out for ticket deals, we got ours for £20 each and our seats we upgraded when we got to the theatre. Nice work!

  • Glen Hansard: High Hope (Video)

    Glen Hansard: High Hope (Video)

GlenHansardGlen Hansard returns to his roots in his new video for ‘High Hope’. Ballymun is the setting for the Hedi Rose directed video. The ‘mun and its people are beautifully shot and I really like the slow transition from black and white to colour.

High Hope is taken from ‘Rhythm And Repose’ and recently featured in Parenthood where Glen also appeared singing the tune. The episode featured Kristina Braverman’s (Monica Potter) struggle with breast cancer. Part of the profits from the sale of High Hope on iTunes will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer. You can grab it here on iTunes.

Ballymun is about a fifteen minute walk from where I’m currently sitting. I would have loved to have been in the Shopping Centre when that busking session happened.

You can catch Glen live in Ireland in just ten days time,

Sun 16 Dec – Ulster Hall, Belfast
Mon 17 Dec – Vicar St, Dublin
Tues 18 Dec – Vicar St, Dublin

    Christmas 2012 at axis Ballymun

The first thing I thought when I saw all this was ‘oooh deadly’. As the Axis theatre is about a fifteen minute walk away from where I live, it’s the kind of place even if it’s bucketing down with snow in December, you’ll be able to go, have a bit of fun and know you’re going to get home ok. Add to that the exceptional events that take place in the Axis and you’re onto a winner.

    Here’s what’s on this Christmas!

There will be a host of festive events at axis in the lead-up to Christmas this year. The line-up will include a classic romantic comedy, the National Chamber Choir, a Christmas market, Des Bishop and, for the season finale, Humpty Dumpty!

UNWRAPPED: CHRISTMAS ARTS MARKET Thursday 6th December

axis will be hosting their first ever arts market this Christmas, where artists get a chance to exhibit and sell their work. On the day there will be food, music, an opportunity to talk to the artists and savor the festive atmosphere.

    Date Thursday 6th December
    Time 10am – 9pm

COMEDY: DES BISHOP LIKES TO BANG Tuesday 11th December

Des Bishop is back, he likes to bang the drums, and he’s not afraid to show it. Combining his love of hip hop, strong jokes, audience participation and a newfound passion for drumming, Des has fun with wordplay in his brand new stand-up show. Bishop’s famously warm, honest presenting style and restless imagination will be in evidence again. Des has proved very popular amongst audiences in axis since he first piloted Joy in the Hood here in 2006.

    Date Tuesday 11th December
    Time 8pm
Tickets €20 (Christmas party dining packages from €25 up)

THE PICTURES: THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER Monday 17th December

For Christmas, The Pictures (axis’ film club for the over 55s) will be celebrating with seasonal classic The Shop Around the Corner. This 1940 American romantic comedy stars James Stewart & Margaret Sullavan, and is about two gift shop employees who can barely stand each other…not realizing they’re falling in love as anonymous correspondents through their letters.

The Pictures events are organized by Dublin City Arts Office and axis, in association with access>Cinema.
    Date Monday 17th December
    Screening time 2.30 pm
    Price 2 euro members/ 4 euro non-members
    Membership 3 euro

    SING Tuesday 18th December

axis will again be offering local people the opportunity to workshop for eight weeks with singers from the National Chamber Choir of Ireland and perform alongside the choir in a special Christmas event at axis. (The project starts at the end of October.) Sing is in association with Dublin City Council Arts Office and the National Chamber Choir of Ireland.

    Date Tuesday 18th December
    Time 8pm
    Tickets Free

    HUMPTY DUMPTY 4th-27th January

Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall??? Why?

So that Winne the Wicked Witch could gain control of the king’s kingdom. In the egg she placed a sprite, the Witch’s protégé. With his innocence and lack of knowledge she intends to rule the land. However, Humpty Dumpty is on hand to put a stop to her plans!

Another smash (geddit?!) pantomime from Holding Court Theatre Group featuring the King’s Housekeeper Martha Puff Puff and Ailfe from the Palace “The Scrubber” with dancing, singing and lots of fun.

    Dates 4th-27th January
Times 2.30pm (Sat & Sun) and 7.30pm (Thurs and Fri)
Tickets 12/8 euro (All tickets for Thursday performances are 6euro)
