    2020 // Living a Green Life

2020, the start of a new decade, a chance for us to push the reset button and start over. It seems as people, that’s something we all need. Like the bad guy in a movie finding redemption, people strive to be a better version of themselves.

As I get older, while I know that money is important, I think it’s more important that we live as full a life as possible.

Ways I try to do this are by writing here when I can, I’ve always found that I feel better when I write. Listening to music is always good, taking photographs, which I love, being creative in whatever way I can. All these are extremely cathartic.

But that’s not enough anymore. The world, as much as I like to think it, does not revolve around me. The time for bullshitting is over, we need to think not only of us now but of people who will be living in our houses and apartments in 40 or 50 years time. What legacy will our generation leave?

I’ve been thinking more and more about this. We don’t recycle enough in the UK. Being at home in Ireland for Christmas definitely confirmed this. Every piece of ‘rubbish’ is analysed and put in the correct bin.

We need to take more use of things we buy, we need to repair where we can instead of putting junk in landfills. We need to use less plastic. We need to find alternative ways of living. We need to find ways of being as self sustainable as possible, that might mean living alternative lifestyles, living in alternative housing, just being green.

How we can do this is something that has been bugging me over the past while. We can still lead full lives but we don’t have to pillage this earth, we can try to make life in fifty years tolerable. We need to be less selfish.

This is something that I’ve been reading more and more about. Green eating, green living, green building.

I’m also going to try to be plant fueled from January onwards. I’ve been vegetarian for years but I feel it’s time to step it up. There are still foods in the press (cupboards if you’re outside Ireland) that have dairy in them. I will use them as I feel that disposing of them would be another unneeded waste.

I’m going to try and write more about this and general life stuff. This week, I watched a Peter McKinnon video about when he was learning web design and his tutor asked why buy a domain which was just his name. He replies by saying that whatever appears on the site, it doesn’t matter. What is central to each item is his interest in it. I’ve often heard people speaking about blogging and that you have to be niche. However, nessymon is me and whether it’s writing, radio, video, photography or whatever the topic I chat about, the central connector is me. I started this blog in 2008, so 2020 means I’m now in a third decade blogging. I hope you stay with me as I try to figure out the future world.

What Kind of Blogger Am I - nessymon

Over the past while, I’ve joined a number of blogger groups on Facebook. To me, back when I started this little website, it was to be more of a place where I could share my college assignments, projects and things I was doing.

I’ve always enjoyed writing, I actually get really tensed up if I don’t write for a while. So, it’s something I have to do, for me.

As I got more into writing, the harder I found it to put myself into a niche. I like writing about music, about movies, about life, about technology. Why should I have to decide where I fit in?

I’ve always been a little uncomfortable with the term ‘blogger’. Yes, I keep a web blog of things I do but the term has become synonymous with, in my opinion, ridiculous terms, like digital influencer – someone who has a shed load of followers on a social media platform and people will then pay money to flaunt a product.

That’s not me, never will be. A forty something queer woman who likes radio, baseball, music, the work of Baz Luhrmann, a good saag paneer and kriek beer probably doesn’t have the audience that say, a food or fashion blogger will have. I just want to know if it comes in black and/or if there’s a veggie option.

Some of my writings I share on my little web log, others I don’t, like the short film scripts I’ve written or the children’s story I’m currently working on. While I may never have shed loads of views, tonnes of followers, this is my space on the internet. This is all mine, where I am the editor, I write (Talulah points out the mistakes). It’s for me.

Writing is the same as music. It’s easy to forget why we started it in the first place. I started because it was something I enjoyed, something I found relaxing and cathartic. Somewhere I was in control. That hasn’t changed. I’m never going to be able to keep up with major blog sites, that’s cool. This is for me, it’s my web blog, my release. If someone reads, if someone enjoys it, then that’s an added bonus.
