St Patrick’s Day Parade – I have a confession to make

My first memory of St Patrick’s Day is standing in our house in Rockfield Road in Kells, screaming my head off as my Mum was putting a nice green ribbon in my hair. Daddy was bringing me to Mass but all I remember was the ribbon knotted, feeling like a rock was sitting on the top of my hair, pulling my hair.

My memories of St Patrick’s Day then go from one form of pain to another. I’m a cold creature at the best of times and occasionally I will throw in a ‘I haven’t been this cold since the 1983 St. Patick’s Day parade in Kells.

Truth is, I think it was earlier than that. It could have been anywhere from 1979 – 1983. I was in Brownies, we always ‘marched’ in the parade in Kells. In between the FCA, the Silver band and the tractors, you had us, the Scouts and the local football teams. When I think about that day, I remember the cold. I remember the rain and the hail hitting my face as we walked past the old Army Barracks down Canon Street and into Suffolk Street. I remember the cold on my legs and wondering why we couldn’t wear trousers. I can’t remember if I had a coat on, I presume I must have. But I just remember the cold.

I then remember sitting in the living room in our house and trying to defrost, with that pain in your hands and feet. The pain of the cold and the numbness slowly leaving and the feeling coming back into my hands.

So here’s my confession. I moved to Dublin in 1997. I lived there until 2013. 16 years. 16 St Patrick’s Days. 16 St Patrick’s Day Parades in Dublin and I haven’t seen one of them.

The closest I ever got was when, a couple of years ago, KNBR, the Bay Area sports station I listen to, were in town for the occasion. I went to meet PCon and the crew but bypassed the festivities, crossing closed roads but never seeing the parade.

Am I the only one? Is there anyone else who has been in Dublin that long, who made the place their home and hasn’t seen the St Patrick’s Day parade? I hear people talking about the Dublin parade but going when they were kids, but they’ve been to the parade. I haven’t.

This year, I’m going to aim to see it, not as a Dublin resident but as a tourist! Edit: March 14 2017. Didn’t make the 2016 parade either. I thought I might see the one in Navan but missed that too!

For your enjoyment, here’s some video of the FCA in Kells at the St Patrick’s Day parade, probably about 1990/1991. Pity there was no one else in the parade.

    100DaystoChange3

    January 3 / 4 / 5 2016

Today is Tuesday January 5th. Since Sunday, I’ve learned one thing. If I’m not doing something to further my 100 Days to Change, I actually start feeling guilty. I guess that means that keeping a note of everything here on the blog is a good thing and will hopefully keep me on the straight and narrow.

Sunday was a little bit of a chill day, getting ready to head back to work yesterday. I did another bit of work on the back end of my website and have plans now for some further changes which will happen over the next week or so.

I’ve also been working on some plans for a new website, with a new domain for another venture. So I’ve been breaking down everything and putting it all into a planning map of how I want the site to be. I’ve also start work on the copy for the different sections.

It really didn’t help my plans that I didn’t really sleep on Sunday night for some reason. But, I still was up in time to pop into Paperchase and get a proper actual notebook without blobs of glue.

First work day of 2016 wasn’t quite a daunting as Sunday night’s fear would have one believe. One of things I really want to do in 2016 is pick up speaking French again. Since moving to London, I haven’t really had the chance or opportunity to speak much French but I want to change that. One of the big things we getting back into a language is getting your ears used to how it sounds and picking up what you do know, and then trying to figure everything out after that.

In order to do this, last night seemed like the right time to settle down to a French drama series, ‘Les Revenants’. The ending just screams for a season 3. I’m not going to spoil it for anyone. So all I’ll say is it’s good. Real good.

Waking up this morning, I felt I had been hit by a truck. The horrible cold I had last week and reared it’s ugly head again. I blame picking up everyone else’s germs at work. So, the main thing this week is for me to get through the week without falling over. Oh, while I’m at it, I did learn something valuable today. If you’re taking medication in a capsule, for example, a cold and flu remedy, make sure you drink lots of water. If you get a stuck in my throat feeling, drink more. It’s not nice when it melts or explodes.

I will admit I took it a little easy this evening but while I was doing that, I was checking out some music for my radio show. Got a couple of brand new gems for this Saturday!

I’m off to sleep and hopefully get rid of this bug.

The only thing I can find that rhymes with Equinox is pox.. I’m not a fan of the weather from here til next Spring.  September traditionally in Ireland is not a bad month, with a fair bit of sunshine.

I remember getting sunburned on Oct 5th 2001 in London!

Other interesting things happen, college and school starts up but I can’t think of anything really nice.

Living in the northern hemisphere means we are heading into Winter,  on Twitter last night someone mentioned there was 93 sleeps til Christmas. Thanks!

Me, I need sunshine and probably don’t get enough. It doesn’t help that I go a bright tomato red within ten minutes of the Summer Sun hitting my fair complexion.

The heating is on in the evenings already, it’s cold, you need it but more depressing I think is the evenings are dark already. Last night it really was pitch black at 2030. 🙁

I wouldn’t be surprised if I got that Seasonally Affective Disorder, sunshine makes me happy 🙂

As I prepare to head back to college next week, think of poor old me and my extra layers and gloves (fingerless but with a mitten like top that flips over) and my Elmer Fudd hat as I try to function within our geographically placed icebox.

It’s September now, what will I be like when we reach our climate reaches its coldest in January…

Birr! More than a town in Co. Offaly!

    ….nessy out!
