I Guess You Heard The News? // The London Ear

I’m sure that you’ve all heard by now that RTE are making some changes and my home, RTE 2XM, is to be no more.

I haven’t been told how long the station will remain on air or how long The London Ear will broadcast on 2XM.

The London Ear will live on 🙂 and I will continue to help to give a platform to arts and music, even after 2XM has gone.

For now though, it’s all business as usual and #TheLondonEar will broadcast episode 266 this Saturday at 1pm with guests Eoin Glackin and our friends from Strange Fish Theatre Company chatting about Frank McGuinness’ The Matchbox.

I’ve been a part of the RTE family since 2011, firstly with Culture Cafe and since 2013, here in London with The London Ear, and I will be forever thankful for the platform it has given me to chat to so many amazing people in the music and arts fields and share so much amazing music with you all.

But, I’m still here for now, I will endeavour to fill every second I have on air to the best of my ability.

Things change but my passion for music, the arts and the Irish community here in London hasn’t and won’t.

    Thanks for listening!

Thesis - Roll out of DAB in Ireland - nessymon

Ok, I better give this its full title

The Roll Out of Digital Audio Broadcasting in Ireland and Explorations into the Future Radio Landscape

In 2012, I was finishing my degree in Dublin City University, a BSc in Multimedia. I decided to do a thesis on The Roll Out of Digital Audio Broadcasting in Ireland. At the initial presentation stage, I was told I needed to cut back, that I was trying to do a Phd in three months with this. So I ended up with what we have here.

I really enjoyed researching this and chatting to everyone about digital radio in Ireland.

    Why put this online now?

Over the past few weeks, people have asked me if they could read my thesis. You have two options for that. You could go to the library in Dublin City University and sit own and read my written book or, now, you could read it here.

Although my thesis covers online radio, satellite radio and what most people consider digital radio, your little radio box that also has FM, it’s a shame that in the five years since I wrote this, that not a lot seems to have changed with DAB in Ireland. Even RTÉ 2XM, on which I present The London Ear, is still technically in a trial.

I guess some of the interest has come since this article has appeared on RadioToday about the closure of dB Digital Broadcasting’s DAB multiplex.

    Topics covered in my Thesis

    • Digital Audio Broadcasting in Ireland
      • Digital Broadcasting from The Broadcaster’s View

The London Ear on RTÉ 2XM // Show 140 // Christmas Eve 2016

It was Christmas Eve babe… Hope you’re having a fantastic time wherever you are, surrounded by friends and loved ones.

Thanks to you all for listening. Over the past year, The London Ear has grown, fantastically. We’re getting more members of the Irish community in London involved and getting more people sharing and listening to the show.

The London Ear is brought to you by a team of me so when I get feedback or you share on social media, it really means a lot. With a marketing budget of zilch, the only way we have to share what I do on The London Ear is by word of mouth or social media.

    I thank you.

Talking about ‘Coming Out’ on TalkRADIO

June 25th was London’s Pride parade. I’m not hugely into all that. I normally stay on the sidelines but I do see why Pride is so important to LGBT people. We’re all normal, sometimes it takes others a little bit longer to see that.

All the wise inspirational quote people on social media always say to do something you’ve never done before everyday. Slightly impossible methinks. They also say something that scares you everyday. So, when the producer of the Anna Williamson show on TalkRADIO asked me to go on air and talk about coming out, I agreed.

Yip, it was scary and it’s not something I’ve ever spoken in public about really.

Thanks to Anna and producer, Des Busteed, for being so nice and of course to Maeve, often referred to as Talulah on these webpages. We were 16 years together on June 25th 2016.

    Here’s the interview:
