    New Dublin Transport Map Unveiled

I do love a good map. Old maps, new maps, maps of countries that don’t exist any more. The London Underground Map is iconic and a work of genius. But there’s never been anything like it for Dublin, until now.

Enter Chris Singleton, yes, the fella from Five Grand Stereo and Style Factory Communications and graphic designer, Richard Hart. They’ve got together and completed the very awesome, Dublin Train Map and a very nice website to boot, Dublin Public Transport.

You’ll never had to try figure how how the hell to get from Dundrum to Castleknock anymore. Even the train commuter belt is taken into account.

    • So in this map you’ll get all DART, Commuter and Luas lines along with at-a-glance frequency guidance.
    • Wheelchair accessibility information for each station is included on the new map – something that is missing from existing maps. (hurrah)
    • The map provides clear information regarding which stations provide bike and car parking.
    • The map includes the two Airlink airport bus routes to help visitors to Dublin switch easily from airport buses onto other modes of transport in the capital.

    Download the Dublin Train Map

You can download the map in both PDF and JPG from DublinPublicTransport.ie.

When you download the PDF, you’ll also get a station index which isn’t in the jpg.

The map is still in BETA so if you’ve any thoughts on things that should be included, do get in touch with Chris and Richard. This is an independent project using information that is publicly available from travel operators in Dublin. No one just bothered to put the whole lot together before.

As well as the new rail map, the website, DublinPublicTransport.ie, has lots of other features:

One of my bugbears is about how Ireland, took up a lot of train lines across the country. In the past few years, Dublin has finally managed to get a cross city LUAS Line. Imagine actually being able to go from South to North Dublin, without having to change trains! I love love trains, I love the new trams. This new little map feels like someone had the gumption to actually get up and make a Dublin map that all capital cities had but Dublin had been left behind on.

    Hurrah! Bravo chaps!

Photos // George Michael – 25 Live Tour

On what have been George Michael’s 55th birthday, I’ve decided to share some of the photos I took of George in 2006 / 2007 in Dublin and Belfast during his 25 Live Tour.

Being a huge George fan, these photos have been precious commodities to me over the past decade. Looking at them now, even though the cameras / phones were terrible in comparison to today’s standard, I’m thrilled that I have these personal memories of George.

I saw George six times during the 25 Live Tour, twice in December 2006 in The Point Depot in Dublin, once in the RDS in Dublin in June 2007, I also saw him twice in The Point Depot in and the last night of the tour in Belfast in August 2007. Yes, that’s three times in one week.

The very first night in Dublin was amazing. Myself and my sister, Cory, went. I’ll never forget the bass kick in during the second song of the night, Flawless. Steve’s live bass over the programming was just insane. I can still feel it pounding in my chest.

Over the course of the tour, there were songs that grew on me even more. I guess this was because of the audience reactions and interactions. The singalong during ‘Amazing’, the arm waving throughout ‘Spinning The Wheel’. I didn’t think ‘Freedom 90’ could get any better, George adds a riff from Michael Jackson’s ‘Will you be there?’ during some of the shows.

I bought a t-shirt at every show I went to. The one with the Shoot the Dog, George Bush style. A Listen Without Prejudice album cover t-shirt, 4 t-shirts with different dates on them, the dates being added as the tour got longer and longer. I bought 2 versions of the tour programme and a George keyring that still comes with me everywhere.

When George died, I cried my eyes out. I never met the man but he had such a profound effect on me since the age of 11 or 12. I’ve never visited his house, I kinda wanted to but he was such a private person, I would’ve hated to have invaded his personal space like that. The last thing I would have ever wanted to do was piss him off after all the joy his music has brought me.

I’m so glad I got to see George during the 25 Live Tour and once during The Symphonica Tour. I loved each night and I loved seeing how happy George was on stage, smiling and putting every ounce of energy into each song. He got buzzed off the crowd and the crowd got buzzed thanks to him. So lucky to have seen him live. George was one of the last great musical icons.

Tune of the Week // Graham Mitchell – Maria Browne

I first heard about this guy from my friend, Sarah. It was about four or five years ago and there was this young fella called Milky near where she lived and she thought I should check out his music. He was good but needed a little time to perfect everything.

Fast forward to 2017 and Milky has dropped this moniker in favour of his own name and has released a couple of cracking tracks. A few of months ago, Graham Mitchell released ‘Inside I’m Dancing’ and ‘You’ve Disappeared’, a piano/guitar led ballad that highlighted his vocal and musical abilities. But the release of this track ‘Maria Browne’ proves just how far the young Dubliner has come.

‘Maria Browne’ is an old school story about a love lost with a upbeat sixties soul vibe. Clocking in at just under two and a half minutes, the full band sound and production from Jon Dotts, are in perfect for the era. This is a huge jump for Graham Mitchell, showing a glimpse of what is to come.

You can find out more about Graham Mitchell on Facebook or Twitter

Get Maria Browne as a Free Download

You can get Maria Browne as a Name Your Price Download from Bandcamp, that includes for free but why don’t you support your local artist and give him a quid or two.

Spotify Tune of the Week Playlist

I’ve started putting Spotify playlists together, including a Tune of the Week playlist, which includes all the tracks I’ve chose as Tune of the Week here on nessymon.com. You can find the playlist here. Make sure you follow, it will be updated weekly.

  • An hour to kill.. in Dublin

An hour to kill.. in Dublin

It’s not often I get an hour just to wander around Dublin’s city centre. It’s the thing I miss most about not living there. Having an hour to sit and have a coffee, looking at a window at the world going past, randomly meeting a friend and having a chat. That doesn’t happen in London, you have to arrange a time, a place.

    Ah, Dublin!

The week before Christmas, I had a chance to wander around Dublin. When you hear the term, “I have an hour to kill”, it’s often a guideline, it could be 90 minutes or more. I flew home from London for an appointment on the Tuesday night. I still consider Dublin home. I flew back to London on the Wednesday. I had to be at the airport for 530pm, I had hour to spare, definitely no more than 90 minutes.

    f Remembrance, Dublin - nessymon
    Garden of Remembrance, Dublin.

I walked from Eccles Street on Dublin’s north inner city to O’Connell Street, taking a few photos as I went. It funny the things you miss or see differently when you’re not around it all the time. It’s easy to forget the Guinness signs are unique to Dublin or that the post boxes are green, although they still have a royal crest (a throwback to before the formation of the state).

I love the Garden of Remembrance. It’s a haven in the city centre. I remember, while living in Dublin, popping in with a takeaway coffee and sitting down, uninterrupted for half an hour. I also remember needing to do a telephone interview but was stuck in the city centre with a previous engagement. I ran up O’Connell Street and interviewed Miles Kane. He was in a cafe in Paris, I was sitting in the Garden of Remembrance.

I popped in for a minute, taking a photo but a cold wet December day doesn’t make anywhere outdoors enticing. I headed down Parnell Square to O’Connell Street. When I was last there in August, the street was dug up, roadworks everywhere thanks to the expansion of the Luas tram line.

Yamamori - Tofu Steak - nessymon
    Tofu Steak in Yamamori

I was hungry though. I needed food. And seeing as I was in Dublin, my next stop had to be Yamamori Sushi. I love the place, the vibe and the food. Although London has a lot of good restaurants. I haven’t found as nice. I’m a veggie and love their Bento boxes.

When I got there though, I decided to go with something different. A tofu steak with steamed pak choi and grilled asparagus. This was served zakkoku rice and a salad. Top it off with an aLoe vera juice and I’m sorted. €10 for the main, €2/3 for the drink. It’s not often that I actually get to sit and have a while to myself. London does that to you. I miss having the extra time I had while I was living in Dublin for this.

Yamamori was warm and relaxing and the staff were welcoming. This is what I consider heaven.

I didn’t have time to sit much longer. It was getting to the time when I had to head to the airport. I left Yamamori and returned to O’Connell Street. Daylight had faded and the Christmas lights brightened up the roadworks.

A couple more photos of Dublin in the rain and it was time to get on the aircoach to bring me to Dublin Airport.
