  • Twenty Years Ago Today: Kevin Foley Became a Hero

Imagine, it was twenty years ago today when Kevin Foley scored a goal and David Beggy slotted over a point to end the now infamous Meath Vs Dublin saga of 1991. Over four games the two teams played for five hours and forty minutes and 237,000 people attended the games.

This was just a preliminary round game, Meath then drew with Wicklow, then beat Laois and Offaly in the Leinster Final. They played Roscommon in the All Ireland Semi but unfortunately lost to Down in the final – 1-16 to 1-14.

  • Leinster Final 11/07/2010 Meath vs Louth

meath jersey crestToday was to be a historic day. Being from Meath I was hoping that the nine year Leinster GAA football title drought would come to an end. This morning I was buzzing and couldn’t wait for match time. Meath, my home county would take on Louth, our neighbours, who hadn’t won an All Ireland title since 1957.

The game started, Louth drew first blood, after missing an open goal.. David Villa would have been extremely disappointed with himself.  Half time came though and despite Meath missing silly chances they were 3 points up.

Second half, Meath seemed to be on the ropes, Louth rallying better. A loss to Louth, being honest, is not something I would want to endure. I’d rather lose to arch rivals Dublin. Meath have always had a fighting spirit, you can never rule them out of anything and with ten minutes to go, the game was 10 points all.

Leinster Trophy - Worth fighting for?Louth got a goal through JP Rooney but the Meath fans urges pushed the players on, giving everything in the last few minutes. Some completely stupid time wasting by kicking the ball away and then a late tackle saw Colm Judge sent off for Louth. With three minutes additional time to be played, Meath threw everything at the ‘wee’ county. A high ball in towards the goal mouth was caught by Joe Sheridan who turned and shot, the ball somehow was kept out by Louth. It dropped to Sheridan again who tripped over the Louth Number 3, Dessie Finnegan, while also being rolled over by goalkeeper Neil Gallagher and somehow the ball ended up in the back of the net. The goal was awarded and Meath won the Leinster Senior Football title 2010.

Whatever the result of the game, so be it. If Meath had to lose, we could have done nothing about it. If Louth had to take their open chances, they would have been celebrating. What happened next though, took our game and stamped all over everything it has ever stood for. (more…)

  • Ireland vs South Africa

I’ve never been to a rugby game before so when my sis asked me if I’d go with her to Ireland v South Africa, I jumped at the chance.

There was a great vibe in Croke Park, everyone was relaxed and in the mood for a good game.

The IRFU really know how to entertain people. The musical interludes definitely added to the build up before the game.

I’ve been in Croke Park at GAA matches more times than I can count. This time though was different. Maybe it was because it was an international game. Everyone there was on the same side.

The National Anthem was sung with gusto but when ‘Ireland’s Call’ was sung it was something different altogether.
It was, being totally honest, quite overwhelming. The Phil Coulter song was sung with passion and respect. What really struck me was how the crowd waited til the very end of the music outro to applaud. It doesn’t happen like that with The National Anthem.

The fog hanging across the stadium was a bit mad. At certain points of the game it was hard to see the top of the opposite stand.

As someone who isn’t overly familiar with the rules of rugby I thought the refs radios were the best thing ever. For €10 you could purchase an inear radio from which you could hear all the refs chats and decisions. Genius!

The game itself.. It turned out the right way for us. Northen Hemisphere champions beating Southern Hemisphere champs!

Really enjoyable afternoon, I’ll go to another rugby game. Hopefully it won’t be so cold at the next one.
