Tune of the Week // Christine and The Queens: Tilted

Christine and The Queens’ awesome track Tilted, is this week’s Tune of The Week

I remember the first time I heard this song, I absolutely loved how understated everything was. A simple drum and synth bass line drove the song and Christine’s vocals sound like how someone signs in their bedroom. Honest and letting everything out without screaming their head off.

I listen to a lot of French music and French music radio always provides the soundtrack to my Saturday mornings. One of my faves from a few years ago, Christophe Willem never reached the heights he did in France, when venturing outside his native land. This isn’t the case with Christine and The Queens. Now, the album ‘Chaleur Humaine’ is a slow burner, having been originally released and reviewed by Pitchfork in 2015.

At the time of writing, her album, ‘Chaleur Humaine’, is Number 1 in Ireland and Number 3 in the UK. This was obviously helped be her appearances at Longitude in Marlay Park, Dublin and Glastonbury amongst others in the UK.

So far, I’ve managed to miss her festival appearances, instead have to be satisfied with online TV catchups.

This is where I’m thinking ahead, to next summer. Myself and Tahlula want to go to Primavera. I was made too jealous looking at Facebook posts and videos of everyone having an awesome time. Plus we’ve been chatting about going to Barcelona for absolute ages. Take a week off and we can do both!

This year the festival was headlined by Radiohead, LCD Soundsystem and Sigur Ros. Next year, I can see Christine and The Queens edging their way towards the top of the bill on the main stage.

Tilted has a beautiful vibe for lazy summer days. Tune in, turn on, and I dare you not to try dancing like Christine.

  • Interview with Benjamin Francis Leftwich

benleftwichBenjamin Francis Leftwich releases his debut album ‘Last Smoke Before The Snowstorm’ this week. I first spoke to Ben in March for Goldenplec but had the opportunity to catch up with him last week, when he was just home from Glastonbury.

    How was Glastonbury?

‘Glastonbury was amazing, I couldn’t believe how many people turned up to my show, very very good. My main show was on the acoustic stage on Saturday and it was incredible.’

Glastonbury is one of the highlights of the musical summer, what made it so special for you?

‘It was the first time I had played a festival on the main stage where the tent was rammed and it felt like one of those moments where it felt like it was really working. People were really into it and people knew the words. Just to be at Glastonbury and all the history of the festival was kinda overwhelming but it was amazing.’

  • Wanna play at Glastonbury?

Glastonbury Emerging TalentHell! Who doesn’t?  In 2010,  a Glastonbury appearance helped Shouting at Planes on their way to Irish National radio play and getting lots of nice things said about them.

So are you a band/artist and think you’ve got what it takes? The Eavis’ are looking for UK and Irish bands to enter a competition to win a slot on the Main Stage. Previous winners include Scouting For Girls, The Subways and Stornoway.

How do you you enter? Here’s the blurb..

“For the 2011 competition, acts will be able to enter FOR ONE WEEK ONLY from Monday, 10th January until Monday, 17th January 2011 right here on the official website. Entries for ETC2011 will be FREE. To enter, you will simply need to supply us with a direct link to a web page where we can hear at least one of your songs (MySpace, official site, YouTube, SoundCloud etc).

Once the entries are in, a newly-recruited panel of 40 of the UK’s best music bloggers will help compile a longlist of 120 acts. The longlist will then be whittled down to a shortlist of 10 artists by judges including Glastonbury organisers Michael and Emily Eavis, before the live finals in April decides the winning act.

The entry form will open here on the official site at 9am on Monday, 10th January.”
