    The London Ear Show128 Romes

On this week’s show we headed to Toronto, to speak with Andrew Keyes from Canadian based Irish band, Romes.

Interview with Andrew Keyes from Romes

I first heard about an Irish band in Toronto way back in 2011. They were the band that would eventually be known as Romes. Back in 2011, they were known as Nightbox and I interviewed the band for Goldenplec and featured them on Culture Cafe on RTE 2XM.

Since then, the band have undergone a line up change and while the current members were part of Nightbox, they have a different edge.

You can find out more about Romes on their website, Facebook and Twitter

Over the past while, I’ve been hearing from more people of Irish descent from around the world. So I’ve decided that I’ll feature some of them on The London Ear. I wasn’t 100% sure of Brian’s heritage but with a name like Mackey, I couldn’t be too far off.

Brian Mackey‘s family went to America in the 1920’s, as many did. They settled and made their lives there. Brian is a musician and has song ‘Are You Listening?’ has had chart success in Germany recently.

    Here’s what happened:
    1. Beck: Wow
    2. DJ Shadow feat Run The Jewels: Nobody Speak
    3. MNEK: At Night (I Think About You)
    4. Brian Mackey: Medication
    5. Chat with Brian Mackey Part 1
    6. Brian Mackey: America
    7. Chat with Brian Mackey Part 2
    8. Brian Mackey: Are You Listening?
    9. Future Fears: Call My Name
    10. Mabel: Thinking of You
    11. Bastille: Good Grief
    12. Chase & Status Feat George The Poet: Spoken Word

Tune of the Week // Hare Squead // If I Ask

Who ever would have thunk that Dublin could sound this awesome? Hip, fresh and funky as hell.

Hare Squead are hail from Dublin, are signed to Columbia Records, and according to their press blurb, ‘Their shared central African heritage combined with a mutual love for skating, music and chicken fillet rolls has cemented them as firm friends and an inseparable unit.’

I don’t eat meat but anyone who manages to get chicken fillet rolls into their press release deserves utmost respect. How Irish can you get?

There’s no denying that being based in another country hinders the amount of new Irish music that I get to hear. I’m so glad, I got to hear this. Simply pumping and insanely catchy.. press repeat.

Tony Konstone, Jessy Rose and E-Knock, bravo gentlemen, bravo!
