The London Ear 260 // UPPBEAT

Hello! Welcome to this week’s episode of The London Ear.

Living away from home is a weird thing. I try to keep up with music in London and with Irish music at home, not wanting to lose my connection with it. But, I’m not there going to gigs in The Academy on a Tuesday night, I will miss things, I know that.

    Chat with UPPBEAT

I was delighted recently when UPPBEAT got in touch on Insta. We were chatting away and he sent me his new track. I was blown away. I couldn’t wait to get the chance to play this on the radio for you.

The production is massive, it sounds huge but the lyrical content what was what really got me. UPPBEAT straight out tackles toxic masculinity and looks at suicide in the West of Ireland in his track. The upbeat track (no pun intended) delivers a beautiful juxtaposition with the lyrics. This is an hugely important Irish track.

I’m delighted that UPPBEAT joined me on the programme today to chat about his life, song and his career so far and his now famous, nay, infamous deliveroo jacket branding.

He’s a good bloke and deserves much success. You can find out more about him on Facebook and on Insta.

  • Lethal Dialect: LD50 Part 2 (Album Preview)

lethal dialectDublin rapper, Lethal Dialect is wasting no time and gearing up for the release of LD50 Part 2 in 2012. The first album was released earlier this year and I had the pleasure of having Lethal Dialect and his collaborator Costello in for a live session in February DCUfm when Culture Cafe lived there. Awesome session, must put it online.

LD is again working with G.I. and Jonnyboy and has guests Costello, Mouse, Tommy Hand and Wila Lee on the album. Absolutely loved the first album, going on this preview, the second one looks to shine as bright.

  • Nugget: Irish Tune ft. Siyo & Class A’z

Over the past few years Class A’z have been working brilliantly as a genuine Irish hiphop collective. Redzer, Terawrizt and Co. have brightened up the Dubin scene. The cause has also got a nice shot to the arm with Nucentz winning the Spin1038 competition to have Lupe Fiasco add a verse to his track.

‘Irish Tune’ is taken from Nugget‘s second album ‘Ready to Diet’ the follow up to the Ballyfermot native’s ‘The Nugget You Love to Hate’ which features the immense ‘You Fat Bastard’ ( I have been known to go round singing this particular track – a lot)

These guys are the real deal and pull no punches. If you want a quick guide to Irish Hip Hop check out:

Most of these are available from here. Amazing talents and really nice guys.

  • MG: One More Day Review

    MG

I wrote this for MusicReviewUnsigned, Direct link here.

Irish Hip hop has come on in leaps and bounds in the past couple of years and has been consistently getting better all the time, acts like Nucentz and Rawsoul leading the pack.

‘One More Day’ is the new single from Irish artist MG (Mark Gaughran) and is heavily Eminem influenced. This is an artist trying not to sound Irish but because he’s not trying to sound Irish, he does. The guy can rap, there’s no question about that. The production of the track is throwing this reviewer off a bit, even to the reverb/delay used on MG’s vocals. Maybe the tracks producer should look outside the ‘E’ category in his local record store.

It’s quite a laid back track, I don’t know if there’s enough impact in the chorus / ‘One More Day’ refrain. This might have been a better second or third single.

In ‘Haunt Me’, Gaughran lets his rhymes slip off his tongue at breakneck speed, impressive. This track has a rockier approach but has a more melodical chorus, I prefer this one.

Gaughran’s talent is not in question.. just get a good Hip Hop producer or perhaps look at a collaboration with some of the genre’s crew here. It will be interesting to see how Gaughran develops.
