Tune of The Week 20/07/2012: Kodaline

KodalineEvery week I chose one song to be my Tune of the week , this week it comes from Irish band, Kodaline, who are about to release their debut EP. It will be out in September and one track from the E.P., Pray, is available to download for absolutely free from praydownload.kodaline.com. My tune of the week though is another track from the E.P., ‘Lose Your Mind’, it has a great video and I love the psychedelic-ness of the track.. rock on!

    {Edit: I just might play the track on 2fm on Sunday night – listen to find out}

Free Music Monday 25/06/2012: Fred and Bob

Today’s recommended free music comes from the awesome Dublin based four piece, Fred and Bob. I’ve been looking forward to to this E.P. for a long time. I first got to know the band when they came onto Culture Cafe when it broadcast on DCUfm. Great laughs were had with the Emma, Sophia, Gill and Neil.

I then had the honour last week of giving Eagle from this E.P. it’s first airing on my last radio show on DCUfm. You’ll be able to hear me chat to Emma, on Culture Cafe on RTE 2XM this Wednesday at 10am. I’ll have a podcast up later too.

Anyway, this awesome new E.P. was just released on Friday and is the first release in about eighteen months for the band and tis a cracker!! It can be downloaded from Bandcamp.

    Here’s the video for Eagle!

Silhouette: Running Against The Wall Review

Shauna Tohill is Silhouette but with this single Ms. Tohill does more than just reveal the outline of herself. Tohill cleverly gets the refrain in early in the song, building familiarity with the track. ‘Running Against The Wall’ is a pounding in your face indie pop tune with clever arrangements and instrumental breaks and big bold fat bass lines which cross genres and build to a frenzied climax.

Undoubtedly, Tohill will gain comparisons to Tori Amos and Kate Bush due to her piano led songs. Instead of playing it safe though, she grabs the ‘female piano singer-songwriter’ tag and gives it a good shake, stamping her own mark with the help of her powerful vocals.

While previous single, ‘Can’t Keep Up’, showed Silhouette’s pop sensibilities (anyone remember Hue and Cry?), ‘Running Against The Wall’ shows an artist who has developed their art and makes their huge sound seem so easy. Keep an eye out. I really like this.

    Catch Silhouette live:

    July 1st:
Summer Madness, Kings Hall, Belfast

    July 6th :
Youth Fest NI

    July 21st:
Glasgowbury Festival
    August 18th: Stendhal Festival, Limavady

Tune of the Week 08/06/2012: A Dark Horse

Over the past few days I have been looking at songs to include in my Definitive Football Collection blog post and this video was sent in my direction. While A Dark Horse‘s ‘Take Me Home’ isn’t a football song, the delicate haunting instrumentation and voices have combined with the Aoife Kelleher directed video to produce something quite special.

This is how many of us old enough to remember Euro 88 and Italia 90 remember them. For those of us a little older, this is what I remember Espana 82 and Mexico 86 like, me always a tomboy, together with my brothers and all our friends riding bikes, making goalposts with jumpers and building camps and staying in them until it was nearly morning. This is quite simply a stunning piece of work.

A Dark Horse features Hugh Rodgers and James Parker, with a little help from their friends Luke Slott, Vivienne Long, Adrian Mullan and Niall Woods. Their Debut EP is out in July 2012.
