    Top Cat: Movie Review

Top Cat The MovieRemember when you were a kid, schemer, Top Cat and this bunch of buddies lived in a backstreet alley where all they wanted to do was get the better of Officer Dibble? Well, they still do. The cartoon from the 70’s has been given the full length movie treatment. What’s interesting about this is that this English version dubbed from the Mexican/Argentinean original. Officer Dibble is still trying to get to be Inspector but is overlooked for another badass who Top Cat tries to out manoeuver.

The animation is this quite interesting, the traditional 2D cartoon characters we know and love remain 2D but are in in a 3D environment, which works well and looks great, I just don’t know why the Cats now have mobile phones? My cat doesn’t have one. The animation keeps you interested for a few minutes but after that, well, this is one the kids will want to see on DVD during the Summer holidays.

The Cabin In The Woods: Movie Review

Cabin in the woodsFriday the 13th is a little bit of a predictable date to release a horror movie. But when you know Joss Whedon (creator of Buffy/Firefly/Dollhouse) is behind ‘Cabin in The Woods’, it’s going to be the only predictable thing.

Along with fellow Buffy writer Drew Goddard (who also worked on Lost), Whedon has come up with the most original slasher/monster/zombie movie in, well, ever. It’s entertaining, funny, it will have you laughing out loud and you’ll never be bored. In fact, probably the worst thing about this is that you’ll only be able watch it for the first time once. It’s a masterclass in warped storytelling and given Whedon’s past, I wouldn’t expect anything less.

The ‘Scooby Gang’ idea from Buffy is taken one step further in ‘Cabin in The Woods’ and features Chris Hemsworth (Home and Away) as the jock and the ‘Shaggy’ character could easily be bestowed upon Fran Kranz (Dollhouse), who beautifully plays stoner, Marty.

This is an adventurous journey into film making. For the Whedon fans, it’s Adam’s siblings in the Initative vs Scooby Doo vs Buffy’s Season five finale, except better. For everyone else, it’s quirky, jerky, weird and will make you go ‘What the f-?’ a few times and it also features one of the best cameos ever.

The only way this could get any better was if Joss Whedon came to my house, cooked me dinner and gave me a live commentary in my living room. The best ninety five minutes of 2012 so far, beyond excellent.

(Could you tell I liked it?, I’m going to see it again)

  • Red Dog: Movie Review

RedDogWhen it comes to animals in movies, you’ll either get me to fall in love with it or detest it, there’s no middle ground. ‘Cats and Dogs’, definitely not my kind of movie. ‘Red Dog’ though, had me within moments. It tells the story of how one little doggie can affect so many lives in a small outback mining village in Australia as he searches for his true master.

‘Red Dog’ is directed by Kriv Stenders and based on a true story. While the story may be a little predictable and although tinged with sadness, there are also lots of laughs. The script is clever, the story is told to a trucker by the village locals as they explain how a hitchhiking dog has touched all their lives.

Josh Lucas plays the lead role of ‘John Grant’ while the gorgeous Rachael Taylor, who is currently staring in the TV remake of Charlie’s Angels, plays his love interest, Nancy. They are brilliantly supported by a motley cast who portray the mining community. And, we can’t forget Koko the dog,who recently won ‘Best Dog in A Foreign Film’at the Golden Collar Awards in Los Angeles. (more…)

  • Haywire: Movie Review

haywire posterIt’s always nice to see a movie set in your hometown, here part of Haywire was filmed in Dublin so getting to see a preview was going to be a treat.

As far as I can remember the only other time I’ve seen a film on opening night where it was set was Madonna’s The Next Best Thing, which was set in Santa Monica. The locals giggled as local bars and clubs came onscreen. In the Savoy for the preview of Haywire, similar happened but squeals of ‘Ooh Burger King’ didn’t seem as exotic.

Haywire is directed by Steven Soderbergh, yes he of Ocean’s Eleven fame and with a cast that includes, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas and of course, Gina Carano, you would expect a decent script to start with. (more…)
