The First Two Months With Odeon Limitless

One of the things I really miss about Dublin is how often I used to go to the cinema. I was also lucky enough to be able to go to press screenings and then write about those movies on the digital pages of this here blog.

Here in London, commuting is high on my list of pet hates. It takes about an hour to get to and from work on packed trains each day. If you go straight home, there’s little incentive to actually get up and head back into town for an evening. It feels like a chore.

Talulah was off for a couple of days for her birthday in June, (while I couldn’t get the days off) and headed for some chilled time in the cinema. Kinda jealous by that, we went to see another movie the following weekend when I was able to go.

Before I go any further, this is NOT an ad, I’m just telling you about how much sense this makes.

Here’s the thing. Cinema tickets are expensive, approximately £14.50 depending on the time of day and location. By going to two films that week, Talulah actually paid more than what we would pay per month if we got Odeon Limitless cards. You also get invites to movies previews and you get 10% off certain products at the counter. Those nachos and hot cheese are sooo bad for you but they taste so good!!

Limitless cards cost us £19.99 per month as we include cinemas in central London. That’s about a fiver more than seeing one film. And there are more Odeon cinemas closer to us than any other so it’s a no brainer.

We’ve now made a little ritual of going to the cinema. Once the following week’s times are released, we book for the Friday evening. In the space of two months, it’s become our thing.

We signed up online and then went to see a film where we were given a temporary paper card until our actual card arrived in the post. It took about 7 working days. Just be aware, you need to take a photo of yourself on your phone before you apply online. The photo you supply will be printed on the card, so there’s no spreading the card around among your mates!

Since then, we’ve seen films in four different cinemas. Covent Garden, Haymarket, Tottenham Court Road and Surrey Quays. I think our favourite is Covent Garden. Even though it is central London, it’s never extremely busy.

The Haymarket Odeon must be experienced. There are, maybe, 50 seats, all recliner chairs, with a little arm tray for your drinks and nibbles.

    So what have we seen?

    • McQueen
    • The Happy Prince
    • Hereditary
    • Whitney
    • Sicario 2
    • The Secret of Marrowbone
    • Ant-Man and The Wasp
    • Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again!
    • Mission: Impossible – Fallout
    • The Meg
    • The Darkest Minds

    Next Up:

    The Equalizer 2

If you like your movies and want to make yourself leave the house, think about getting an Odeon Limitless card. Go as many movies as you want, as many times as you want to for £19.99 a month. Done Deal.

So would you like me to review more movies? Let me know!

  • Is Netflix Worth The Subscription?

netflixIt’s just over a month since Netflix launched here in Ireland giving everyone one month’s free access before starting to charge. I’ve got two days left in my free month and I’m not sure if I will subscribe. Netflix is a subscription based film and television streaming service, you can watch on demand and there are no limits to how much you watch.

My dilemma is this. There are not enough current or contemporary films included in their content. Since my free month began, I’ve watched a good few movies trying out the service. There have been a couple I hadn’t seen before. A lot of things that I would be interested in, I would have had on DVD anyway so these would be ruled out to watch, for me, online.

A lot of the content seems, please correct me if I’m wrong, to come from the 80s, 90s and 00s. An awful lot coming up in my recommended stream seem to be from 2000-2002. French movies, I like them, there’s eight on Netflix and some of those in my DVD collection. (more…)

    How to make a zombie

Seeing as Halloween is coming and its fun to make Zombie movies, and I know one person this week was chatting about making a new one (and someone shared this on Facebook), I thought it was time to share this. Even if you’re not making a zombie movie, it’s a good way to freak the sh1t out of your neighbours. Enjoy!

  • This Is it – Movie Review

    michael-jackson-this-is-it-movie-poster

This was what fans had longed to see. Unfortunately it took his death to show the world what Michael Jackson was really like.

Directed by Kenny Ortega, ‘This Is It’, goes behind the scenes at MJ’s rehearsals for the never to be 50 concerts in the O2 in London.

From the outset we see Michael, the performer, the perfectionist and sometimes the teenage-like Michael. The editing in the movie is superb, noticeably so in ‘Wanna be Starting Something’.

Jackson’s love for his music and his knowledge of music is clearly seen. His perfectionist views on his own music, it’s obvious which of his songs he prefers performing which in an almost childlike fake cough way, when during a Jackson 5 song, he is told that they (show director) cant hear his voice he insists that he must ‘save his voice’.

The admiration his dancers and musicians had for him can be clearly seen, the dance moves and newly filmed video segments (Thriller looks amazing – I would love to see the 3D version) only give us a glimpse of what could have been.

For all the Godlike comments that MJ has been given, the one thing that struck me throughout this film was his fraility. His slight build and almost insular movements show that away from the big press conference announcing the 50 concerts, here was a man so fragile.

The soundtrack only serves to remind us of what a talent he was.
