  • Von Shakes: The Routine review

vonshakes I wrote this for MusicReviewUnsigned.

The debut single from Dublin quartet Von Shakes, kicks in with an uptempo rock beat. ‘The Routine’ shows a band that have grown in stature since their debut EP ‘Mind Your Head’ and if they keep going in the direction they are, could grow to be a force to be reckoned with.

Going by the credits, Paul Byrne, Conor Brady and Phil Hayes, they have a good backroom team behind them, it shows on ‘The Routine’. It’s tight well produced and has a dead stop ending that radio presenters love.

‘The Routine’ has driving rhythm, memorable hooks and a catchy chorus. Looking forward to hearing more.

  • Hitman Lord: I Drank As I Review

I wrote this for MusicReviewUnsigned when I get a direct link I will update.

Prior knowledge of Hitman Lord tells me to expect intelligent pop/rock. ‘I Drank As I..’, the follow up single to ‘Wanna Healing Music’ doesn’t disappoint.

‘I Drank as I..’ is an elegant, tasteful, sophisticated mid-tempo track, almost a soundtrack to a dream sequence. It is beautifully, delicately mixed. I defy you not to sway along.

‘I Drank As I’ is an excellent piece of music, proving Hitman Lord is one of the best songwriters around and a leading light for a new decade.

  • John, Shelly and The Creatures: Long May You Reign Review

    John, Shelly & The Creatures
I wrote this for MusicReviewUnsigned when I get a direct link I will update.

Listening to the new single by John, Shelly and The Creatures proved to be a slight headwreck. Where did I know that song from? Back to the PR notes.

‘Long May You Reign’ is currently featured on the TV advert for Discover Northern Ireland, though we only get a glimpse of what a great track this is. Sometimes listening pleasure can be changed by knowing a songs history, not this time.

  • Vampire Weekend: Contra Review

vampire weekend coverHow many Bands let you embed their new album’s stream in your blog or website? Not many, and it’s proving a great marketing tool and means of marketing for Vampire Weekend who release their second album ‘Contra’ this week. ‘Contra’ is the follow up to their debut, Vampire weekend which was released in January 2008.

The album starts off with ‘Horchata’, a track made available for free download in October 09 and being honest, got a few plays on my show on DCUfm’s Culture Cafe. It’s a pretty raw, rhythm led track with harmonious choirlike  backing and refrain. Their African music influence is quite apparent here. Can someone tell me what Horchata tastes like please?
