    The London Ear // Show 293 May 23 2020

It’s a Bank Holiday weekend here in the UK. I will admit, I’m glad I have an extra day off from work.

So this week I started digitizing all my CDs and found a CD from 1994. I’m going to write a blog post about the whole process, which is turning into a bit of hassle.

Anyway, I found a CD by Swampshack, a band from my hometown, Kells in County Meath. Two of the band, Ollie Cole and Ian Melady, went on to form Turn. So I thought I’d play the title track from the Screamer EP.

I might turn that into a regular feature.

I also had a #FirstPlay of the new single ‘Headspace’ from Maddox Jones. Keep an eye out on the blog for a Q&A with Mr Jones in the next few days. You can find out more about him on Facebook and Twitter.

I think I will make this a regular feature also.

Hope you enjoy this week’s show. Stay safe!

The London Ear: Show 292 // Sistas Are Doing It For Themselves

Hello from London, I saw a social media post online during the week about an Irish music playlist that was full of testosterone and not one female voice in it. Lots of people were firing off ‘hate’ at the playlist makers. No, it’s not right to leave out the ladies from playlists. If music is good and made by men or womxn then if it’s good enough to be on the radio / playlist, it’s good enough.

But, I do believe, as a feminist, if I can do something to balance the ills, and show support for Irish womxn who make awesome music, then I will. I could easily have filled the show ten times over, but this is a start.

If you like this idea, maybe I’ll do something like this every couple of weeks.

The London Ear // Show 283

So our worldview has dramatically changed this week. St Patrick’s Day festivities not only across Ireland and the UK, but worldwide, have been cancelled.

It’s a strange one. The effect of Covid-19 feels like more than once in a lifetime event. I’m not sure humanity has ever faced a situation like this, where something has spread across the globe so quickly.

It’s up to us to band together, support each other, support our artists, musicians, communities. We’re better together.
