Tune of the Week // Caan – Changes

tune of the week caan nessymon

Ex – Ou Est Le Swimming Pool singer, Caan, is back with the Mkulu produced ‘Changes’

It’s a while since we’ve heard from ex – Ou Est Le Swimming Pool’s Caan but he’s been a busy boy since ‘Into the Night’.  Caan has been off making some bangers with Loadstar, Frankee as well as My Nu Leng/MTA’s ‘Horizons’.

Mkulu‘s production on the track is outstanding, the instrumentation is subtle and beautifully balanced with Caan’s vocals. ‘Changes’ is a great urban pop track but also has it’s hip hop sensibilities with it’s music production and the lyrical content. Hopefully this means that we’ll finally get to see an album from the Camden native.

‘Changes’ is another real gritty look at London and this follows through in the black and white video for the track directed by Chas Appeti. Interestingly (and cleverly), Caan has teamed up with Tommy Danvers’ 808 Drinks and Felix Howard to produce the visuals – (sponsorship ahoy?)

From the outside Grime seems to be taking over, but this is the sound of real London.

‘Changes’ is out now on Cats and Cream.

  • Free Music Monday 22/08/2011: Caan

This week’s recommended free legal music comes from Caan, formerly one third of the brilliant Ou Est Le Swimming Pool. This version of ‘Surround’ is the Faith SFX and J Vibes remix.

Check out Caan’s first single ‘Now Hear This My Friends’ which is due for release at the end of September, I’m liking it!

  • Ou Est Le Swimming Pool: The End

Ou Est Le Swimming PoolThe two remaining members of Ou Est Le Swimming Pool seem to have decided to call it a day under that moniker. They were one of my favourite acts over the past couple of years and Charlie Haddon should be remembered for being a part of something special.

Earlier today the band issued this on their Facebook page:

Dear fans. To all those who’ve asked what’s next – Caan is half way through his amazing solo album and Joe has produced Venus In Furs debut album! Click to listen. Thank you for your support over the last 3 years.. Goodbye. x x x

Best of Luck to Caan and Joe, here are some tasters of their new music (more…)

  • Ou Est Le Swimming Pool: The Golden Year Review

Ou Est Le Swimming PoolIt’s taken me a while to try and review this objectively. Even now I’m not sure I’ll be able to.

From the opening notes of ‘You Started’, it’s hard not to feel nostalgic for a band whose lead singer’s life ended way too early. Charles Haddon’s vocals draw you in immediately in this sparsely produced track, letting his vocals and a simple piano line take centre stage. A beautiful cello line makes this track an amazing opener. Completely different from the singles we have previously heard from Ou Est Le Swimming Pool.

‘The Key’ is the first of the band’s four singles on the album. The track brings OELSP back into the 80s synth pop that we have come to know from the band. It’s also probably the least obvious single but is a definite grower with a nice build up in the chorus.

OELSP have a great sound and playing it down as much as possible I love the dirty bass synth sound they have perfected so well.  These New Knights shows this in all its glory and shows Ou Est Le Swimming Pool were never going to be a one a one trick pony. ‘Dance The Way I Feel’ is infectious and makes you want to dance with its shouty chorus. On this version there’s also the introduction of a nice string section. Pure heaven! (more…)
