The London Ear 299 // With Mick Cronin, from the band, Cronin

Hello from the land where, if you’re looking the news / telly, you’d almost believe that that pandemic was over and no longer a threat. But hey, that’s for another blog post.

On today’s episode of The London Ear, I catch up with Mick Cronin, from the band Cronin. They released a new mini album ‘A view from the next room’. We chat about the release, adjusting to the changing world as a musician and a recording studio owner. We also chat about Mick’s Irish identity, having lived between Drumlish, in Longford, and Leeds, what it meant to be Irish at school in Leeds and how Boyzone helped the lads with the ladies.

We also get a ‘hello’ from Mick’s daughter, Tara. From the sounds of things, she’ll be on the show with her own band in no time!

You can find out more about the band on their website, Facebook, Twitter and Insta.

This week’s #FromTheVault track comes from Me In The Park, a fantastic band from Dublin.I love ‘2nd Opinion’ which I played on the show.

Next week I’ll be chatting to Maddox Jones.

The London Ear Show 298 // The Pride Edition

    Happy Pride!

I’m delighted to be able to devote an episode of The London Ear to Pride and all things LGBTQ+ on today’s show.

Pride is a little different this year as we can’t have parades and wave our flags but it’s still really important, even virtually, to remember why we have a Pride parade. It started as a protest march for equality for all LGBTQ+ people and it’s really important that we don’t forget that. Now, more than ever and no one is excluded.

It’s great that I got to play an array of artists, International and Irish. This week’s #FromTheVault track was one I’m guessing hasn’t been played on Irish radio before, but is in my music vault as a great. It comes from a UK based act called Infamy, which basically featured George Michael, his cousin Andros and also Pepsi, of Pepsi and Shirlie, on vocals. I’m playing the Forthright mix of Infamy’s cover of Dead or Alive’s ‘You Spin Me Round’. Not sure you can get much more LGBTQ.

    Conversation with Dyvr

I was truly honoured to chat to Dyvr for this week’s show. At first, the chat was going to be just about his new single. ‘Ocean’ with St. Bishop. But, the London born, Belfast based musician is more than a musician. He’s an activist, also working to provide LGBTQ+ musicians and artists with safe spaces.

He’s also launched a range of ‘Quearrings by Dyvr’ and also runs a Queer storytime on Instagram every Saturday, where people talk about their lives and stories.

You can find out more about Dyvr on Facebook, Twitter and Insta. You can listen to his music on >Spotify.

The London Ear // Show 295 – A Celebration of Black Irish Music

The London Ear // Show 295 – A Celebration of Black Irish Music

I think this may have been the most important episode of The London Ear. I’m delighted that I have this platform and have previously played a lot of the artists on today’s show. I’m also delighted that this gave me an opportunity to learn about some new Black Irish artists. As I’ve said on the show before, when I’m living away from Ireland, in a full time job and not able to get to shows in Ireland, it’s easy for new artists to slip right past me. I’m delighted that I managed to play some brand new artists and learn more about their music. Thanks to Finn for pointing me in the direction of some of them.

We all know that Phil Lynott was the first well known Black Irish musician. Fast Forward to the late 2000s,  I became very aware of the influence of Black culture on Irish music through some DJs who became friends to me, Frank Jez, DJ Ahmed and DJ Wax.

It’s only right Black culture and music sits happily alongside Irish culture. Irish people have travelled around the world and left our culture and music in the new places we call home. It’s only right and proper that that we celebrate the lives and cultures of Black people from different backgrounds who have come to to call Ireland home.

The influence of Black culture and its influence on Irish music is amazingly brilliant. Turn the speakers up, spend the next hour getting to know just a few of Ireland’s amazing Black singers, rappers, writers, producers and musicians. Black Irish Music and Black Lives Matter.

    The London Ear // Show 294 – May 30 2020

It’s starting to look like we’re easing out of lockdown a little lot, too much if you ask me. Whatever happens over the next few weeks, make sure you look after yourselves.

It’s the morning of June 1 as I write this, going on the figures, we’ve still a long way to go. Over 2500 people were diagnosed with Covid over the weekend. Do everything in your power not to add to those numbers.

On the show on Saturday, I had a #FirstPlay from Default Man, aka Darragh Glennon formerly of Mullingar, now living in sunny Spain. I dug into my digital archive and pulled out Boats Away from I Am Not Lefthanded for my #Vault track.

    Enjoy!
