    The London Ear Show 248

Hello! Another Saturday, another episode of The London Ear!

I have an hour of great new music for you today alongside a couple of British acts, namely Kate Tempest, who is also a South East London resident, and The Ghosts. The Ghosts were formed by Alex Starling of ex Ou Est Le Swimming Pool. I absolutely adored that band and was delighted to be able to play their new single, ‘We Lie To Ourselves’.

The London Ear Show 246 // Jonny from Wynona Bleach

The London Ear with Wynona Bleach

This week’s guest on The London Ear was Jonny Woods from Belfast band, Wynona Bleach.

The band have been on a bit of a high as they opened for Alice in Chains, in Dublin’s Olympia Theatre, less than two weeks ago.

Wynona Bleach are in London for two shows and guitarist / vocalist, Jonny Woods, spoke to me about how the band have been progressing over the past while, those Alice in Chains gigs and how, even though Jonny’s day job is producing music for other people, the band are bringing in external producer for recording their new material.

I really enjoyed the chat and I’ll have to get Jonny back on at some stage, solely to chat about his involvement with other musicians in the Belfast area.

You can find out more about Wynona Bleach on their website, Facebook, Twitter and make sure you follow them on Spotify.

The band are playing in The Finsbury Pub in London on June 3rd. Event details here.

If you want to find out more about Jonny’s music production work outside of Wynona Bleach on Facebook and his website.

  • The London Ear: Show 245 // Niall McNamee + James Or

The London Ear: Show 245 // Niall McNamee + James Or

An hour goes by in a flash and that’s exactly what happened on today’s episode of The London Ear. I was delighted to chat to two London residents, actor, playwright and musician Niall McNamee and singer songwriter, James Or.

    Chat with Niall McNamee

Niall McNamee black and white moody headshot

I’ve wanted to chat to Niall for a while now. I first saw him on stage as Neil McCormick in ‘Chasing Bono’ in the Soho Theatre just before Christmas. He was outstanding in that role.

Fast forward a couple of months, I see Niall has written a play called ‘Shootout’ and it’s the perfect opportunity to get him on The London Ear.

We chat about his work and life in London and his love of football and how playing keeps him in touch with the Irish community here. Niall is also a musician and will have an album out next year.

‘Shootout’ runs from May 28th – June 1st at the White Bear Theatre in London. You can grab tickets here.

After our chat this week, Niall sent me a message to let you all know that he will be playing the role of Fran O’Toole in The Miami Showband Story from 8th August 2019- 21st June 2020. It starts in the Opera House in Belfast, will tour around Ireland before finishing in The Gaiety Theatre in Dublin. That will be magic!

Keep in touch with Niall on Instagram and Twitter.

    Chat with James Or

I really enjoyed my chat with James Or for this week’s show. Once the ‘interview’ was finished, we stayed sitting outside The National Theatre, chatting away. Only went I went to move did I realise how cold the evening had gotten, such was the conversation.

James is originally from Cork, now living in London and has been here for about eighteen months now.

He has been involved with music for years, playing in bands but 2019 has seen him release his own music. First ‘Berlin’ and now ‘An Attempt at Momentum’.

James is having a London launch for ‘An Attempt at Momentum’, on Wednesday 29th May at The Islington in Tolpuddle St here in London. See you at the gig hopefully!

You can find out more about James Or on his website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and of course Spotify.

The London Ear 244 // Junk Drawer + Stefan Murphy

I was delighted to be joined on this week’s show by two excellent guests. Stevie Lennox from Junk Drawer and Irish music scene stalwart, Stefan Murphy.

Belfast band, Junk Drawer, are on their way for a show in London on May 24th. You’ll find them in The Finsbury alongside The Magic Loyus, Drew Davies and Ollie Trevers.

The show also coincides with the release of their single ‘Year of the Sofa’, which also appears on the compilation album ‘A Litany of Failures’.

It was great to catch up with Stevie Lennox and chat about the band and where they are, as well as the Belfast music scene.

Steve’s knowledge is second to none and he uses that to great effect as co-editor of online music publication, The Thin Air.

Find out more about Junk Drawer on Bandcamp, Facebook and Twitter.

    Chat with Stefan Murphy

If I start writing about Stefan Murphy, I’m liable to veering into fan girl territory.

I have a huge amount of respect for Stef, both as a musician and as a good guy.

Stef has previously worked under the names ‘The Mighty Stef’ and ‘Count Vaseline’ but this is the first time that Stef has released music undet his own name, Stefan Murphy.

It’s a few years since I last saw Stef. I moved to London and he moved to Atlanta, Georgia.

I was delighted to catch up with Stef for a chat before his gig in The Slaughtered Lamb in London last week. It was a great gig, with support coming from Rob Corcoran and Ciaran Dwyer (Knoxville Morning).

Stef’s new single is ‘Dry Cider’, written about his friend, David Murphy, who died in 2017.

You can catch Stefan Murphy on tour with his band The Athletes of Soul, all around Ireland in the next week or two. (Will add dates when I’m not on the phone)

You can find all the dates here and more info about Stef on Facebook, Instagram, on Bandcamp.
