  • My New Show: Culture Cafe on 2XM

Culture CafeFor the past two years on DCUfm, I have been doing a music, arts and culture show called Culture Cafe, alittle idea I had to chat to people in the arts field and have a bit of music in there too. Culture Cafe ran for an amazing 53 episodes on DCUfm.

Today I am delighted to say that Culture Cafe has a new home, on RTÉ’s 2XM.  The show will be broadcast on Wednesdays at 1000 and repeated on Sundays at 2100.

In the first episode I chat to musician Benjamin Francis Leftwich, Editor of The Social, Steven O’Rourke and organiser of Dublin Flamenco Festival, David Power. Tune in!

Edit: I got a Facebook page sorted.. go on, like it!

  • RedRadar.ie and beyond!

RedRadar_animated-gifI meant to write about this earlier. Damn flu! I met Roisin from RedRadar in The Grand Social on the night of The Digital Socket Awards.

We had a bit of a chat about what RedRadar is and she asked if I’d like to get involved, RedRadar is part of the online section of Young People’s Programming in RTE and the website covers music and fashion.

So a couple of weeks ago I went in to record some video for them. I spoke about some album artwork and about my defining music moment. I’m not going to give away what I spoke about but I will say I couldn’t decide on one piece of artwork. (more…)

  • Switchblade

This is one a trailer/pitch for Storyland, a RTE scheme for online film/television, visual if you will, production. This is really good, I also happen to know the Producer Declan Lynch, who is an extremely talented chap. Really like it! Tell your friends and even your enemies!

  • Gerry Ryan: R. I. P.

Ireland lost one of its best know media personalities yesterday. Gerry Ryan was larger than life. He was the kind of radio presenter that you either loved or hated.

Being honest, I prefered Ryan when he was on his late night shows in the late eighties. On these shows, he introduced me to Deacon Blue, Prefab Sprout, lots of Irish bands too I didn’t know. I remember fondly as he played Aidan Walsh’s ‘Community Games’, the song was so bad it was good.

I remember not being happy when Ryan was moved from his night time slot to the 9am slot. Within weeks, he turned the show into his own and became one of Ireland’s biggest radio stars.

He did some television too, most recently Ryan Confidential. I always thought though, he never got a real break with TV, he never got a real cracker of a TV show. I remember though Gerry Ryan and Dave Fanning were team captains on the eighties music show ‘Number One’. RTE One, Monday (I think) at 7. I always watched.

I met Gerry a few times, seemed like a nice guy. I remember when I was 18 doing work experience in RTE, being sent to look for something in the video library.  Gerry, producer Philip Kampf (who was producer on the show I was working on) and a group of others were in Connemara for a week, without supplies. This lead to the infamous “Lambo’ controversy where a lamb was killed for food.

At 53, Gerry’s gone way too soon and is a major loss to RTE, the media and really to Ireland. My sympathies go out to his kids, Moira, family and partner.

    The Ryan line has closed.
