  • Arthur’s Day 27/09/2012: Paint The Town Black with Fatboy Slim/Texas/Professor Green

Arthur’s Day 27/09/2012: Paint The Town Black with Fatboy Slim/Texas/Professor Green

paint it blackI was delighted to be at the launch of this years Arthur’s Day, which will take place on September 27th this year. The launch took place at the Guinness Storehouse and headline acts to play the event were announced.

    • Professor Green
    • Example
    • Tinie Tempah
    • Texas
    • Fatboy Slim
    • Amy MCDonald
    • Mika

There will be 500 events taking part all over the country, this year there are no tickets on sale. You just get down nice and early to the venue of your choice. Other acts already confirmed include

    • Picture House
    • Mundy
    • Walking on Cars
    • Dove
    • The Vals
    • The Rapparee
    • The Bonnevilles
    • The Heads of State
    • Ard Ri
    • Midnight Graffiti
    • Fiddlers Green
    • Ruaile Buaile
    • Willie Byrne
    • Gentry Morris
    • Shane Butler

Example and Tinie Tempah have previously played Arthur’s Day. In 2010 the 500 strong crowd in the Village were heard singing ‘Pass Out’ in a cockney accent.

sharleen-spiteri-02 It’s worth noticing that Arthur’s Day supports local entrepreneurs and everytime you check into a venue on Facebook on Arthur’s Day 5euro is donated to their cause.

Anyway at the launch I managed to catch up with Sharleen Spiteri of Texas and you can hear what happened this Wednesday on CUlture Cafe on RTE 2XM at 10 am and for Harry Potter fans, Sharleen relveals where Alan Rickman’s Snape character got his hairstyle from!

Here’s the advert for the event that’s going round, like the global feel to it.

  • The Riot Tapes: Photograph Review

I actually wasn’t going to write about this cos I basically did a review of it when I played it on the Culture Cafe on Thursday night but a few people who know my kind of music, asked me what I thought so here goes.

There are always a few comparisons and stereotypes a band will get with a female singer backed by a few blokes. The opening ‘Stupid Girl’ Garbage/Clash-like drum beat on ‘Photograph’ doesn’t dispel these. The feedback guitar intro then dips into a more Texas-like verse.

Elaine Doyle’s vocals are strong and commanding, I can’t figure out whether its her vocals or the vocal production that reminds me of Sharleen Spiteri. It’s enough to make me listen a couple of times to try and figure out if the vocal lines are reverbed or doubletracked. </nerd>  (more…)
